Analogical optical modeling of the asymmetric lateral coherence of betatron radiation

Abstract: Abstract:By exploiting analogical optical modeling of the radiation emitted by ultrarelativistic electrons undergoing betatron oscillations, we demonstrate peculiar properties of the spatial coherence through an interferometric method reminiscent of the classical Young's double slit experiment. The expected effects due to the curved trajectory and the broadband emission are accurately reproduced. We show that by properly scaling the fundamental parameters for the wavelength, analogical optical modeling of beta… Show more

“…A peculiar behaviour of the coherence due to the different emissions of particles at different radii was recently demonstrated [112][113][114]. Multiple oscillations on the modulus of the coherence factor depending on the transverse non-uniformity of emission can be observed using an asymmetric detection method.…”

“…The synchrotron-like emission can be used to estimate the spatio-temporal coherence in the framework of the theory exposed in Section 2.1 using the osculation circle approximation [112][113][114]. This method can be applied for small oscillations and for small angles of observation in such a way the observer sees only the radiation coming from the maximum of the betatron oscillations as sketched in Figure 10.…”

“…The technique we use to prove the ITICS is based on scanning interferometry of a double-slits array [26][27][28][29][30][31] however, other techniques able to measure the local curvature of the wavefront can be adopted to this aim, such as Hartmann-type wavefront sensors. The optical layout is schematically shown in Fig.…”

“…The asymmetric lateral coherence technique has been recently reported to provide one-dimensional [12][13][14][15][16] and 2-dimensional [17,18] mapping of the real part of the complex degree of coherence Reγ c along linear paths. It is based on a scanning interferometry scheme that exploits an array of double-slits with different spacing Δx controlled by a 2-axis linear stage synchronized with a tracking charge couple device (CCD).…”
