Analog Beamforming in MIMO Communications With Phase Shift Networks and Online Channel Estimation

Abstract: Abstract-In multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems, the use of many radio frequency (RF) and analog-to-digital converter (ADC) chains at the receiver is costly. Analog beamformers operating in the RF domain can reduce the number of antenna signals to a feasible number of baseband channels. Subsequently, digital beamforming is used to capture the desired user signal. In this paper, we consider the design of the analog and digital beamforming coefficients, for the case of narrowband signals. We aim to can… Show more

“…Note that DAC and ADC are conducted not per antenna element but per OAM mode to reduce the device volume and power consumption. This approach is a similar to that of analog and/or hybrid beamforming of massive MIMO in mm-wave wireless transmission [49], [50]. Consequently, each OAM mode signal is obtained after parallelto-serial conversion and necessary signal processing such as channel-decoding, de-interleaving, and demodulation.…”

“…While beamspace-processing techniques do provide a systematic framework for reduced complexity algorithms, they do not include network setup and SLL constraints in the design specification. In some ways, joint design of RFBN and DBF weights is somewhat similar to [23], although a complete list of constraints and RF limitations has not been not included in [23] work.…”

“…One approach to redesign RFBN is through the use of a modified version of orthogonal matching pursuit (OMP) [23] or through successive orthogonal projection of optimal W [10]. We skip the exact algorithm details and briefly explain applying the algorithm for our RFBN setup as follows: For a given S as well as SVD of Θ:…”

“…The number of the RF chains in hybrid systems is less than the number of antennas which makes hybrid systems cost efficient [9]. Non-iterative joint design for the Tx/Rx analog processors at the 60 GHz band was introduced in [12], [13]. The joint design of the analog and the digital processors by utilizing the sparsity of the mmWave channel was introduced in [10], [14].…”
