Indonesia has an increasing electricity demand that is mostly met with fossil fuels. Although Indonesia plans to ramp up Renewable Energy Technologies (RET), implementation has been slow. This is unfortunate, as the RET potential in Indonesia might be higher than currently assumed given the archipelago’s size. However, there is no literature overview of RET potentials in Indonesia and to what extent they can meet current and future electricity demand coverage. This paper reviews contemporary literature on the potential of nine RET in Indonesia and analyses their impact in terms of area and demand coverage. The study concludes that Indonesia hosts massive amounts of renewable energy resources on both land and sea. The potentials in the academic and industrial literature tend to be considerably larger than the ones from the Indonesian Energy Ministry on which current energy policies are based. Moreover, these potentials could enable a 100% renewables electricity system and meet future demand with limited impact on land availability. Nonetheless, the review showed that the research topic is still under-researched with three detected knowledge gaps, namely the lack of (i) economic RET potentials, (ii) research on the integrated spatial potential mapping of several RET and (iii) empirical data on natural resources. Lastly, this study provides research and policy recommendations to promote RET in Indonesia.

Energy needs in Indonesia are increasing every year along with the increase of human population. On the other hand, the rate of energy demand in Indonesia is not matched by the current energy availability. The lack of energy availability in Indonesia, one of which can be overcome by the use of alternative energy from nature, for example wind energy. Therefore, a three-blade horizontal axis propeller wind turbine was designed to obtain electrical energy. The design of this turbine uses several stages consisting of designing, assembling and testing the turbine. The test was conducted to determine the characteristics and performance of the wind turbine. Based on the initial design, the turbine sweep area is 2.4 m with three blades. The blade type is based on the NACA 2410 airfoil made of fiber composite and epoxy resin which is very effective at low wind speeds. The test was carried out on January 13-15, 2021 at Dharma Andalas University Padang with 16 hours for three days. Data recording is done with an automatic system using an octocoupler sensor, anemometer, and a voltage sensor integrated with a raspberry pi 3 microcontroller. From the tests carried out, the wind turbine starts to rotate at a Vcut-in of 1.5 m/s. The maximum rotation of the rotor obtained is 65 rpm with the highest wind speed of 3.9 m/s. The average power and average efficiency of the wind turbine are 9.8 Watt DC and 25.47%. The total electrical energy generated for 3 x 16 hours is 0.219 kWh.

Reserves of fossil energy sources are starting to run low, so the government has launched renewable energy sources. The National Energy Policy (KEN) targets Indonesia by 2025 to use renewable energy sources of 23% of its energy needs. Because of this, the government has started opening places that have the potential for generating renewable energy, especially the areas where PLN electricity cannot reach, withincluding the southern coastal area of Kebumen.. The wind potential in this coastal area of Java Island meets the criteria for a Wind Power Plant. The purpose of this research was to analyze the wind potential in the southern coastal area of Kebumen. The specific purpose of this study was to determine the wind speed and the location and calculate the power generated by the wind in the southern coastal area of Kebumen to determine the potential of PLTB in Kebumen area. The stages of this research consisted of retrieval of secondary data, analysis using Excel, and power analysis using HOMER. Based on wind speed data from NASA, the southern coastal area of Kebumen is suitable for making PLTB, especially Buayan and Ayah, because the wind speed between 2016-2020 is 2.15 m/s. Then, the power produced annually in these places, based on the HOMER application, was 86.50 kWh/year.
