ABSTRACT. The Cordillera de los Andes is the typical example of a subduction-related orogen. Its present topography is the result of post-Miocene uplift, however, Andean compressional deformation and uplift started in the Late Cretaceous, as increasingly recognized in different sectors of the mountain belt. We present evidences of a Late Cretaceous event of compressional deformation in the southern Central Andes (35ºS), reflected in syn-orogenic foreland basin deposits assigned to the Neuquén Group in Argentina and the Brownish-Red Clastic Unit in Chile. Comparison of the facies of these units allows us to recognize a sector proximal to the Late Cretaceous orogenic front, a distal sector with sediment provenance from the forebulge and a western sector where the sediments where deposited within the Late Cretaceous mountain belt. On this basis, we assign the orogenic front to an inverted Jurassic normal fault, the Río del Cobre fault, and reconstruct the structure of the easternmost Late Cretaceous Andes at this latitude. The change in the location of the orogenic front north and south of 35ºS allows us to recognize a long-lived change in behavior in Andean evolution in this sector, which correlates with a change in the shape and the deposits of Mesozoic Neuquén basin. RESUMEN. Levantamiento Cretácico Tardío en la faja plegada y corrida de Malargüe (35ºS), Andes Centrales del sur, Argentina y Chile. La Cordillera de los Andes es el ejemplo típico de un orógeno asociado a subducción. Si bien su topografía actual es el resultado del levantamiento posterior al Mioceno, la deformación y el levantamiento ándicos comenzaron a partir del Cretácico Tardío, como se reconoce actualmente en diversos sectores de la faja montañosa. En este trabajo se presentan evidencias de un evento de deformación compresiva durante el Cretácico Tardío en los Andes Centrales del sur (35ºS) reconocido a partir de los depósitos sinorogénicos asociados, que se asignan al Grupo Neuquén en Argentina y la ʻUnidad Clástica Café-Rojiza' (BRCU) en Chile. Mediante las variaciones de facies en estos depósitos se pueden reconocer un sector proximal cercano al frente orogénico Cretácico Tardío, un sector distal con aporte desde el dorso periférico, y un sector occidental en el que los depósitos se produjeron dentro del cordón montañoso. De esta manera, se puede ubicar el frente orogénico Cretácico Tardío, el que asignamos a la inversión tectónica de una falla normal jurásica, la falla Río del Cobre. El cambio en la ubicación del frente orogénico Cretácico al norte y sur de 35ºS permite reconocer a este sector como un límite entre sectores con diferencias en su evolución andina, que se interpreta como heredado de la evolución de la cuenca Neuquina.

ABSTRACT. The Allen Formation records the first Ingression Atlantic to the Neuquén Basin during the Late Cretaceous. The definition of lithofacies and facies associations interpretation for stratigraphic sections in Paso Córdoba and Salitral Moreno area, Río Negro, Argentina allowed to establish the depositional system that characterized this transgression in the northeastern edge of the Basin. In this paper we present sedimentological analysis of conglomeratic, sandstone, heterolithic and pelitic facies, which allowed the interpretation of tidal channels (TC), intertidal flats (ITF), stormsinfluenced tidal flat (SITF), subtidal flat (STF) and shoreface deposits (SF) parts of the depositional environment. These deposits represent a sedimentary records preserved example of hybrid systems, in which, the base of the sequence has greater tidal influence, while the upper portion is dominated by wave action. The paleocurrent data indicating a NNW-SSE direction to the shore and correlations and spatial distribution of facies associations propose paleogeographic and paleoenvironmental interpretations to Malargüe Group base. Then in this paper the relationship of this coastal environment presents with wind systems previously defined in this area for the Allen Formation.

The Paso C ordoba fossiliferous site (Río Negro, Northern Patagonia) is one of the first Mesozoic fossiliferous localities studied in Argentina. There, turtle, crocodile and dinosaur remains as well as dinosaur and bird tracks have been recorded. Recently, a new locality with vertebrate tracks, the Cañad on del Desvío, has been discovered in Paso C ordoba. Six track-bearing layers were located in outcrops belonging to the Anacleto (lower to middle Campanian, Neuqu en Group) and Allen (middle Campanian-lower Maastrichtian, Malargüe Group) formations. The Cañad on del Desvío locality reveals that vertebrate trace fossils are distributed in two distinct environments, floodplains of a meandering fluvial to shallow lacustrine system and a wet interdune deposit that is associated to an aeolian setting. Also, in the logged section several soft sediment deformation structures were found. In regard of this, a sedimentary facies analysis is provided in order to assess the palaeoenvironmental implications of this new record. The analysed tracks are preserved in cross-sections, on bedding-planes and as natural casts. When it is possible, the tracking surface, true tracks, undertracks and overtracks/natural casts have been identified and the track preservation and the formation history of the tracksite are discussed. Only two tracks preserve enough anatomical details to relate them with their trackmakers, in this case hadrosaurid dinosaurs. The stratigraphical, facial and palaeoenvironmental data of this study support the idea of a transitional passage between the Anacleto and Allen Formation in Paso C ordoba. The presence of hadrosaurid dinosaur tracks suggests that the upper part of the log, where this kind of tracks were found, likely belong to Allen Formation due to this dinosaurs appear in the Southern Hemisphere in this epoch. The sum of osteological and ichnological remains improve the Paso C ordoba palaeofaunistic knowledge. The presence of six different levels in which the trackmakers walked reflects the abundance of vertebrates in the transition between Anacleto and Allen formations.
