Currently, one of the main environmental problems that need to be addressed is the pollution inflicted upon different ecosystems by anthropic activities. One example of this problem can be seen in the Bogotá River, a major river in the Cundinamarca department of Columbia and the main water source supplying the Bogotá savannah, which reaches the Colombian capital city. The Bogotá River is highly affected by effluents and wastewater of domestic and industrial origin, among others. These pollutants are generated and accumulated throughout the entire basin, without ever receiving any type of treatment. The pollution levels to which the Bogotá River is subjected can be determined with the calculation of environmental indices, including microbiological contamination indicators such as total coliforms (TC) and fecal coliforms, which include Escherichia coli, Enterobacter, Klebsiella, Serratia, Edwardsiella, and Citrobacter bacteria, living as independent saprophytes. This paper assesses the quality of the water in the Bogotá River, using microbiological indicators and data provided by the Regional Autonomous Corporation (CAR) of Cundinamarca to assess water samples, extracted based on the climatic bimodality exhibited in the basin in dry and wet seasons. The scope of this study was limited to the 35 monitoring Regional Autonomous Corporation of Cundinamarca (CAR) stations located throughout the middle basin. For these purposes, a multitemporal analysis of the TC and Escherichia coli variables was conducted for the 2007–2019 period, which evidenced the contamination levels in this section of the water body. In broad terms, the current state of the middle section of the Bogotá River basin is unacceptable, due to the different activities occurring within its riparian buffer zone, such as uncontrolled domestic, industrial, and/or commercial wastewater discharges. To optimize water treatability, the continuous improvement of existing treatment plants is expected, as well as the implementation of new sustainable treatment alternatives aimed at improving water quality.

Nature within cities provides benefits for people known as urban ecosystem services. An assessment of urban ecosystem services is growing in South America, a biodiverse and highly urbanized region. To synthesize this growing body of knowledge in South America, we performed a systematic review identifying patterns in the literature and knowledge gaps. Our review shows that Brazil, Chile, and Colombia contribute the greatest number of studies. More than 80% of the studies were published in the last five years, revealing this as an emerging research topic in the region. More than half of the studies had an environmental perspective and focused on services provided by green spaces. Nearly all studies involved regulating services, followed by cultural services. We found clear knowledge gaps, including a paucity of assessments on supporting and provisioning services, as well as the lack of studies in several countries, evaluations concerning land cover other than parks, and large-scale assessments. Comparing ecosystem services in different planning scenarios is urgently needed to make informed decisions, aid nature conservation, and provide ecosystem services for all urban dwellers. This knowledge will contribute to achieving sustainable cities and equitable access to ecosystem services in South America.

Introducción: La ciudad de Xalapa, Veracruz, enfrenta un problema de abastecimiento de agua potable que incrementa cada año debido, entre otros factores, a la deforestación y al incremento poblacional.Objetivo: Determinar la disposición a pagar (DAP) de los usuarios de agua de uso doméstico para la conservación de bosques, considerando las zonas de recarga de la subcuenca Pixquiac.Materiales y métodos: Se diseñó y aplicó aleatoriamente una encuesta estructurada a una muestra representativa de 113 hogares en Xalapa. La información se analizó a través de un modelo econométrico que identificó los principales aspectos sociales, económicos y ambientales, relacionados con la DAP por el servicio hidrológico de uso doméstico.Resultados y discusión: El potencial de la DAP anual asciende a 17 243 032.08 MXN por parte de usuarios del servicio de agua potable a nivel doméstico en Xalapa, Veracruz; 92.04 % de la población tiene una DAP mensual promedio de 10.23 MXN para la conservación de las áreas forestales. Este valor se considera alto en relación con otros estudios cuyo promedio de aportación por persona oscila en 5.00 MXN y puede deberse al alto nivel de concientización que existe en la región sobre la importancia de los bosques. El ingreso, la fuente de ingresos, el nivel educativo y la edad son variables significativas que se relacionan positivamente con la DAP.Conclusión: Existe la DAP por parte de los usuarios que puede aprovecharse para incentivar la conservación forestal en las zonas de recarga de agua en el área de estudio
