For climate change scenarios, there is a high degree of complexity, with impacts on the future availability of water resources. In this context, studies related to changes in rainfall time series are essential in order to identify environmental vulnerability. The objective of this study was to analyze trends in the rainfall regime, number of rainy days and temperature for stations located at different continentality and altitude conditions in Northeast Brazil. Meteorological data of the Instituto Nacional de Meteorologia were used, being classified according to the location in relation to the continent: coastal strip (14 stations), strip of 150-300 km up to 300 m altitude (14 stations) and above 300 m (five stations), between 400 and 600 km from the coast up to 300 m (four stations) and above 300 m (eight stations). All the 45 stations used have a historical series with a data period of more than 30 years. The trend of rainfall and rainy days was obtained through the Mann-Kendall and regression analyses, at significance levels of 0.01 and 0.05, respectively. There were trends of reduction in the number of rainy days, in the coastal strip, as well as reduction in rainfall and rainy days, both in the strip of 150-300 km from the coast and in the Sertão region, with no significant effect of continentality in the strip of 400-600 km from the coast. For temperature, except for Maceió, AL, Brazil, there is a trend of increase in near future.

Atmospheric Pollution Reduction in São Paulo City and the Social Isolation Effect

Since January 2020, some studies have been reporting a reduction in air pollution in several countries due to social isolation measures, which have been adopted in order to contain the coronavirus outbreak progress (Covid-19). This study aims to evaluate the change in the atmospheric pollution levels by NO and NO2 in São Paulo city in the social isolation period. The NO and NO2 hourly concentrations were obtained through air quality monitoring stations from CETESB, from January 14 to April 12, 2020. Mann-Kendall and the Pettitt tests were performed in the air pollutants time series. We observed an overall negative trend in all stations, indicating a decreasing temporal pattern in concentrations. Regarding NO, the highest decrease rates were observed in Congonhas (-6.39 µg.m-3month-1) and Marginal Tietê (-6.19 µg.m-3month-1) stations; regarding NO2, the highest rates were observed in Marginal Tietê (-4.45 µg.m-3month-1) and Cerqueira César (-4.34 µg.m-3month-1) stations. In addition, we identified a turning point in the NO and NO2 series trends that occurred close to the start date of the social isolation period (March 20, 2020). Moreover, from statistical analysis, it was found that NO2 is a suitable surrogate for monitoring economic activities during social isolation period. Thus, we concluded that social isolation measures implemented in March 20, 2020 caused significant changes in the air pollutants concentrations in São Paulo city (as high as -200% in NO2 levels).

Climate changes have been observed all over the world and are pointed out as responsible to impact the natural resources, especially the amount and the quality of the water in a hydrographic basin. Thus, the present research aimed to analyze the variability and trends of air temperature and rainfall data in the Hydrographic Basin of the Ribeirão do Lobo, São Paulo state, Brazil. The weather data from 1988 to 2017 were collected in the Center of Water Resources and Environment Studies of the University of São Paulo (CRHEA), and in five rainfall stations of the National Water Agency of Brazil (ANA) spread all over the basin. To identify climate changes were applied the simple regression, the run test, the Mann-Kendall and modified Mann-Kendall tests. The results showed significant positive trends in air temperature, especially in the annual period and during the third quarter with rising up to 0.068 °C year-1. Significant increases were verified to minimum, maximum and mean air temperature, which suggests possible climate changes during the period in the analysis. To the rainfall data, periods with positive and negative trends were found, although, most of the time the trends were non-significant. However, a significant negative trend of the rainfall was observed in Ribeirão do Feijão station with a reduction of -10.03 mm year-1.
