A wide body of research on team sports has focused on positional status based differences, providing information on inter-player variability according to the functional roles within the game. However, research addressing inter-player variability within the same positional/function status is scarce. The present article presents an analysis of inter-player variability within the same positional status during critical moments, in high-level women's volleyball, using Social Network Analysis. Attack actions of the outside hitters near (OHN) and away (OHA) from the setter were analysed in ten matches from the 2019 Volleyball Nations League Finals (268 plays). Two independent Eigenvector Centrality networks were created, one for OHN and another for OHA. Main results: (a) in side-out with ideal setting conditions, the OHA used more tips and exploration of the block than the OHN; under non-ideal setting conditions, the OHN had slower attack tempos than the OHA; (b) OHA used tip and directed attacks after error situations while OHN was typically not requested after error situations; (c) in transition, OHN typically attacked after having performed a previous action, performing a dual task within each ball possession, while OHA only attacked when there was no prior action; (d) there were also inter-positional similarities, with both OHN and OHA preferring a strong attack in ideal conditions during KI and KIV, and slower tempos in transition in non-ideal conditions. Conclusions: Even within the same positional status, there seems to be subtle, but relevant inter-player variability. Consequently, coaches should devote careful attention when assigning players to positional.

INTRODUÇÃO: O futebol é um dos esportes mais populares, sendo a tática um dos quesitos fundamentais para o sucesso. OBJETIVO: Identificar a associação entre os quantitativos das ações táticas ofensivas de grupo e os parâmetros de resultados das equipes mais bem colocadas no Campeonato Brasileiro Série A, temporadas 2018 e 2019. MÉTODOS: Analisaram-se as seis equipes primeiras colocadas do Campeonato Brasileiro de Futebol Série A 2018 e 2019. O instrumento utilizado foi o Footstats. Foi realizada a análise descritiva das ações táticas ofensivas de grupo e a correlação de Spearman rho entre as variáveis das ações táticas com gols pró e pontos por meio do SPSS™ v. 23. RESULTADOS: A ação tática ofensiva de grupo “virada de bola” obteve associações significativas com “pontos” (r=0,829; p=0,042) e “gols pró” (r=0,943; p=0,005) no campeonato de 2018. No campeonato de 2019, as ações táticas ofensivas de grupo “assistências” e “cruzamentos” evidenciaram associação significativa com “pontos” (r=0,812; p=0,050 e r=0,928; p=0,008, respectivamente), “gols pró” com “virada de bola” (r=0,943; p=0,005) e “pontos” (r=0,812; p=0,050). CONCLUSÃO: As ações táticas ofensivas de grupo associaram-se com gols pró e pontos na classificação final das primeiras equipes em ambos os anos. Destaca-se a “virada de bola” no campeonato de 2018, além de “assistências” e “cruzamento” na edição de 2019, como ações que podem ser relevantes para a conquista dos pontos e por consequência melhores resultados dentro de tais competições.ABSTRACT. Prevalence of offensive tactical group actions in the Brazilian Football Championship A Series (2018-2019)BACKGROUND: Soccer is one of the most popular sports worldwide, with tactics being one of the fundamental requirements for teams to succeed in this sport. OBJECTIVE: o identify the association between the quantitative of the group’s offensive tactical actions and the parameters of result of the top six teams of the A-Series Brazilian Football Championship, seasons 2018 and 2019. METHODS: The top six teams of the two seasons were analyzed. The instrument employed was the software Footstats. Descriptive and correlation analyzes were carried out, together with Spearman rho correlation test between the variables of the group’s offensive tactical actions and the parameters of goals pro and points. RESULTS: The offensive tactical action “switch sides” obtained significant associations with “points” (r=0.829; p=0.042) and “goals for” (r=0.943; p=0.005) in the 2018 season. In 2019, the offensive tactical actions “assistances” and “crosses” evidenced significant associations with “points” (r=0.812; p=0.050 and r=0.928; p=0.008, respectively), as well as “goals for” with “switch sides” (R=0.943; p=0.005) and “points” (r=0.812; p=0.050). CONCLUSION: The number of groups offensive tactical actions were associated with the number of goals pro and points in the final classification of the top teams of both seasons. The actions “switch sides” in season 2018, besides “assistances” and “crosses” in season 2019 appeared as relevant for the achievements of points and, consequently, better results in such competitions.

“…The concrete field of observational methodology, as applied to sports, currently benefits from the advanced development of statistical analyses and specific software to study men and women's sports-related behaviors in order to obtain indicators to improve their performance (Anguera and Hernández-Mendo, 2015; Anguera et al, 2017, 2018). For example, (1) sequential analysis of behaviors using SDIS-GSEQ software (Bakeman and Quera, 2011) has been developed to establish model sequences by high-level sportsmen and women (Castelão et al, 2015); (2) the use of polar coordinate analysis by means of HOISAN software (Hernández-Mendo et al, 2012) enables the study of interrelations between different categories of observational tools in different sports, such as tae kwon do (López-López et al, 2015), handball (Sousa et al, 2015), or soccer (Castellano and Hernández-Mendo, 2003; Castañer et al, 2016); and (3) T-pattern analysis using Theme software (Magnusson, 1996, 2000) can be applied to discover hidden structures in the observed behavior that are not directly visible in elite climbing (Arbulu et al, 2016), futsal (hard-court soccer, Sarmento et al, 2016), synchronized swimming (Iglesias et al, 2015), or bouts epee (fencing, Tarrag et al, 2015). …”

Preliminary Checklist for Reporting Observational Studies in Sports Areas: Content Validity

Observational studies are based on systematic observation, understood as an organized recording and quantification of behavior in its natural context. Applied to the specific area of sports, observational studies present advantages when comparing studies based on other designs, such as the flexibility for adapting to different contexts and the possibility of using non-standardized instruments as well as a high degree of development in specific software and data analysis. Although the importance and usefulness of sports-related observational studies have been widely shown, there is no checklist to report these studies. Consequently, authors do not have a guide to follow in order to include all of the important elements in an observational study in sports areas, and reviewers do not have a reference tool for assessing this type of work. To resolve these issues, this article aims to develop a checklist to measure the quality of sports-related observational studies based on a content validity study. The participants were 22 judges with at least 3 years of experience in observational studies, sports areas, and methodology. They evaluated a list of 60 items systematically selected and classified into 12 dimensions. They were asked to score four aspects of each item on 5-point Likert scales to measure the following dimensions: representativeness, relevance, utility, and feasibility. The judges also had an open-format section for comments. The Osterlind index was calculated for each item and for each of the four aspects. Items were considered appropriate when obtaining a score of at least 0.5 in the four assessed aspects. After considering these inclusion criteria and all of the open-format comments, the resultant checklist consisted of 54 items grouped into the same initial 12 dimensions. Finally, we highlight the strengths of this work. We also present its main limitation: the need to apply the resultant checklist to obtain data and, thus, increase quality indicators of its psychometric properties. For this reason, as relevant actions for further development, we encourage expert readers to use it and provide feedback; we plan to apply it to different sport areas.
