BACKGROUND Previous studies have recorded a high prevalence of intestinal parasites in lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) and coriander (Coriandrum sativum L.) destined for human consumption. This study determined the prevalence of contamination by intestinal parasites in these two plants sold in two street markets and two supermarkets in the city of Belém, northern Brazil. RESULTS A total of 200 plant samples were analyzed (100 of each species). The samples were collected randomly between August and October 2018, examined by the spontaneous sedimentation method with two washes, and stored for 24 h. The analysis found that 89% (89/100) of the lettuce samples and 86% (86/100) of the coriander samples were contaminated. Polyparasitism was more frequent in lettuce, but monoparasitism predominated in the coriander. A total of 226 intestinal parasites were found in the lettuce, with a predominance of non‐pathogenic parasites in the supermarket samples and more pathogenic parasites in the samples from street markets. In the coriander samples, 172 intestinal parasites were identified, with a predominance of pathogenic parasites in samples from both types of market. In the case of the protozoans, the most prevalent species was Endolimax nana, followed by Blastocystis hominis, in both vegetables. In the helminths, hookworms predominated in the lettuce, and Trichuris trichiura in the coriander. CONCLUSIONS These results highlight the need for the monitoring of parasite contamination in vegetables destined for human consumption. Public health initiatives should include educational campaigns on the importance of disinfecting vegetables prior to consumption. © 2020 Society of Chemical Industry

As hortaliças constituem uma importante fonte de vitaminas, sais minerais e fibras alimentares, além de possuírem baixo valor calórico, auxiliando para o alcance de uma dieta equilibrada. No entanto, por serem consumidas in natura, não passando por nenhum processamento pós-colheita, são consideradas um dos principais veículos de transmissão de doenças de origem alimentar. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a qualidade microbiológica da cebolinha produzida em hortas comunitárias no município de Teresina, Piauí. As amostras de cebolinha foram coletadas em hortas comunitárias distribuídas na zona Norte da cidade de Teresina e avaliadas quanto à presença de bactérias aeróbias mesófilas, coliformes totais e termotolerantes. A análise dos dados foi realizada com base na RDC n. 12, de 2 de janeiro de 2001, da Agência Nacional de Vigilância Sanitária (ANVISA). Os resultados obtidos demostraram que, 100% das amostras de cebolinha analisadas foram consideradas próprias para consumo, apresentando níveis de micro-organismos indicadores de contaminação dentro dos padrões microbiológicos estabelecidos. Apesar destes resultados, foram observados durante a realização desta pesquisa fatores importantes referentes às condições das hortas avaliadas, como uso de adubo orgânico não tratado nas hortaliças e armazenamento inadequado da água usada para irrigação e higienização prévia. This study aimed to investigate the occurrence of parasitic structures in curly lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) sold in food stalls open markets in Cuiabá city, in the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso (MT). For this purpose, 50 samples were evaluated using spontaneous sedimentation and centrifugal flotation methods. These techniques showed positivity in 96% (48/50) and 78% (39/50) of the samples, respectively. The sedimentation method was statistically (p ≤ 0.05) more effective in detecting parasitic structures of the pathogens as Entamoeba histolytica, Ascaris spp., Strongyloides spp., Larvae and Hookworm eggs, when comparing both methods. However, these methods did not differ significantly for the detection of Giardia lamblia. Ascaris spp and Entamoeba coli occurred in 64% (32/50) and 46% (23/50) of the positive samples, respectively, with the highest percentages observed. The occurrence of Blastocystis spp., Fasciola spp., Dipylidium caninum and Ascaris lumbricoides revealed detection exclusively by the spontaneous sedimentation method, while Iodamoeba butschlii and Enterobius vermicularis were detected by centrifugal– flotation procedure. These results could reinforce the need to use methods based on sedimentation and the fluctuation of parasite structures in the analysis of lettuce. The presence of parasites in lettuce by fecal origin, with recognized pathogenicity, represents a risk to consumer health and demonstrates a deficit in good agricultural practices in the production, distribution and commercialization of lettuce.
