Previous studies suggest that the environmental, social and governance performance of companies helps to build a stronger image and reputation, thus providing better financial performance. However, the adoption of environmental, social and governance (ESG) practices as a tool for financial risk management is still little explored, especially in undeveloped economies. This research seeks to fill this gap by investigating whether the adoption of ESG practices reduces credit risk in publicly traded companies in Latin America. The results, obtained through an ordered logistic regression, considering the rating of the companies as a dependent variable and the indices of the ESG dimensions, obtained by the Refinitiv base, as explanatory variables, provide evidence that ESG practices are not being considered for the assignment of credit risk ratings from Moody’s and Fitch agencies. Thus, ESG practices are not helping to reduce credit risk, especially when we consider Argentine and Peruvian companies. The results are robust, even when considering the capital structure, profitability, leverage, size, and asset turnover. Thus, the article contributes by showing that even with the advances of credit rating agencies in adopt ESG indicators, it is still not possible to observe an impact on credit risk reduction, as evidenced by the literature.

The Araguaia River basin has the highest fish biodiversity within the Cerrado biome (Brazilian savannah), with many endemic and threatened species by human activities. Despite growing efforts to catalog Neotropical freshwater fish biodiversity, many regions are still undersampled. Our objective is to complement the information about stream fish in two hydrographic basins in the Cerrado. We sampled 72 streams with 50 m stretch in the Upper Araguaia (n = 32) and Middle Rio das Mortes (n = 40) basins. We collected 14,887 individuals distributed in 137 species, 81 genera, 30 families, and six orders. Characidae, Loricariidae, and Cichlidae were the families richer in species. We found a high diversity of rare fish species in the streams sampled, ca. 71.5% of the species had at least five individuals collected, and 18 species had only one collected specimen. The most frequent species were Astyanax cf. goyacensis, Knodus cf. breviceps, and Characidium cf. zebra. Both basins shared around 43% of the species. We caught 76 species in Upper Araguaia and 120 species in Middle Rio das Mortes. Seventeen exclusive fish species occurred in Upper Araguaia, whereas 61 were found in the Middle Rio das Mortes basin. Our analysis showed lower diversity of fish in Upper Araguaia than in the Middle Rio das Mortes basin. Considering the exclusive fish species of both basins, the human threats in those regions, and the few existent protected areas, we need a better look at the aquatic biodiversity conservation of this ecosystem.

Description of the microbiota related with the sulfur transformations in mangroves sediments Mangroves are transitional environments between terrestrial and marine ecosystems, essential for the growth and development of many species with high ecological and economical interests. Despite its recognized importance, mangroves are constantly impacted by various pollutants, affecting its stability. These ecosystems are characterized as anaerobic, rich in sulfate and organic matter, where the microorganisms are essential to the nutrient cycling, particularly those involved in the sulfur cycle, where sulphate-reducing prokaryotes (SRP) appear as frequent and taking an important role. The present study showed that communities of archaea, bacteria and sulphate reducing bacteria (SRB) are abundant, diverse and responsive to state intervention of the mangrove. The abundance measured by qPCR showed that the quantities of archaea and bacteria increase with the contamination. The diversity studied by pyrosequencing of the 16S rDNA ribosomal gene indicated that these groups are diverse, showing Euryarcheota and Crenarcheota phyla of the domain Archaea, and Deltaproteobacteria and Gammaproteobacteria classes of the domain Bacteria, as the most frequent groups. The structure of these communities, as assessed by analysis of network, revealed that the microbiota responds to contamination, reducing and simplifying interactions in the higher contamination. The diversity of groups related with the sulfur cycle studied by DGGE (aprA and dsrB), pyrosequencing (dsrB) and GeoChip (aprA, dsrB) showed that Deltaproteobacteria, represented by orders Desulfobacterales and Desulfovibrionales, is a prevalent group in the sulfate reduction, while Gammaproteobacteria and Betaproteobacteria are frequent in the sulfur oxidation (sulfur-oxidising bacteria-SOB). The GeoChip (aprA, dsrB) was the only method that allowed to detect sulfate-reducing archaea (genera Archaeoglobus and Pyrobaculum), which is the first description of these organism on mangrove ecosystems. Thus, these results show that the microbiota in mangroves areas responds to contamination, having a high frequency of SRB and SOB, thus highlighting the importance of the sulfur cycle in mangrove environments.
