Analgesic Effects of Acupuncuture on Pain After Mandibular Wisdom Tooth Extraction

Abstract: We evaluated the analgesic effects of acupuncture on postoperative pain by comparing patients who underwent routine tooth extraction alone (control group) and those who underwent tooth extraction in combination with acupuncture (experimental group) by the random allocation method. As teeth easy to extract. requiring no gingival incision (grade A) or those difficult to extract, requiring gingival incision or bone cutting (grade B). As local anesthesia, 1.8 ml or 3.6 ml of 2% xylocaine was used. The LI.4, Hegu o… Show more

“…According to the literature, acupuncture analgesia has been employed in approximately 600 thousand operations with 90% of these procedures being successful and anaesthesia reported as being adequate (Zhang et al, 1981;Qin, 1996;Kitade and Ohyabu, 2000;Zhang et al, 2000;Yang et al, 2001).…”

“…[11] Hegu (LI 4) is an acupoint commonly chosen for acupuncture analgesia or anesthesia during colonoscopy,[10] first stage of labor,[12] orthodontic post-adjustment pain,[13] pain after mandibular wisdom tooth extraction, toothache,[14] headache,[15] anterior approach cervical discectomy,[16] craniotomy,[17] and appendectomy. [18] Electro acupuncture at Hegu (LI 4) induces central neural activation in the pain-modulation areas, like the periaqueduct gray matter and the median raphe nucleus.…”
