Anal duct/gland cyst

Abstract: Diagnosis of anal duct/gland cyst is based on routine histologic features, histochemical characteristics of mucus, and/or the presence of a communication with an anal duct or crypt. Based on these criteria, some of the reported cases of mucus-secreting cysts occurring around the anorectum may prove to be anal duct/gland in origin.

“…Perianal cysts may be simple or complex cysts due to secondary infection or bleeding within the cyst seen arising in the perianal region of unknown etiology that may be due to the loss of communication during development between the anal glands and ducts, but in which the gland still preserves its secretory ability, thus creating a cyst, or due to failure of canalization of anal glands during embryogenesis [ 14 ].…”

“…Diagnosis of anal gland cyst is based on the histological characteristics of mucus and/or the presence of a communication with the anal duct or crypt [ 5 ]. Based on these criteria, Kulaylat et al [ 5 ] suggested that some of the reported cases of mucus-secreting cysts occurring around the anorectum may prove to be anal gland/ducts in origin. The authors also think that cysts classified as mucus secretion cysts in past reports may be anal gland cysts.…”
