Anaerobic septic arthritis due to bacteroides: brief report

Abstract

PROCEEDINGS AND REPORTS OF UNIVERSITIES, COLLEGES, COUNCILS, ASSOCIATIONS AND SOCIETIES THE JOURNAL OF BONE AND JOINT SURGERY was over twice the volume that formed after immediate distraction (p<O.Ol). In both groups the proximal fragment contributed more callus than the distal fragment. Daily increments of tensile strain were greater following delayed distraction and even increments of 65 N did not prevent the establishment of a rich vascularity, as demonstrated by micrography. There was a deficiency of capillary blood vessels in the lengthened segments following immediate distraction which corresponded with the formation of thick fibrous tissue. In contrast, delayed distraction was characterised by an oblique, narrow radiolucent zone containing columns of longitudinally orientated chondrocytes undergoing replacement by bone both proximally and distally. This study provided definite evidence that delay was an important factor promoting osteogenesis during distraction of an osteotomy, and suggested that immediate distraction damaged the extra-osseous blood supply.
