Anaerobic digestion of OFMSW (organic fraction of municipal solid waste) and BNR (biological nutrient removal) processes: a possible integration – preliminary results

Abstract: The paper presents preliminary experimental results which aim to demonstrate the possibility of producing easily biodegradable carbon from a two phase anaerobic digestion process for a biological nutrient removal process. Crystallization of phosphorus into struvite from the liquor of the digested flow is the second goal of the process studied. With this integrated process approach it is possible to double the amount of readily biodegradable COD entering the wastewater works by sewers and to recover up to 70% o… Show more

“…The necessity to reduce this adverse effect and to develop a reliable alternative to the fossil fueldependent economy has raised the interest in agrowastes as a renewable energy sources. When applying this concept, a double effect can be achieved: the reduction of fossil fuels' consumption together with solving the above-mentioned environmental problems [33,34]. Therefore, anaerobic digestion of agricultural wastes should be considered as one of the main alternative for treating these types of waste streams in an environmentally friendly scheme.…”

“…The feasibility of applying the two-phase anaerobic digestion process to the organic fraction of municipal solid waste (OFMSW), and to forest residues and MSW was investigated by Cecchi et al 122 and Hooper and Li, 123 respectively. Lee et al 124 maintained stable steady-state operation at a maximum OLR of 7.9 kg VS m À3 d À1 , with about 70% VS reduction in digestion of easily biodegradable presorted food waste in a pilot-scale study.…”
