Anaerobic ammonium oxidation in the old trickling filters at Daspoort Wastewater Treatment Works

Abstract: The century-old trickling filters at the Daspoort Wastewater Treatment Works in Pretoria (Gauteng, South Africa) are known for their remarkable removal of nitrogen from municipal wastewater. Our study was conducted to identify the microbiological processes responsible for this phenomenon and to establish whether anammox bacteria may be involved. An aerobic and anaerobic bench top reactor, both inoculated with biofilm-covered stones from one of the filters, were spiked with ammonia-nitrogen (NH 4 + -N) and ni… Show more

“…These bacteria utilize ammonia as electron donor and nitrite as electron acceptor to form nitrogen gas. They have been found in the back anaerobic part of biofilm systems (Siegrist et al, 1998) and old rock media trickling filters (Wilsenach et al, 2014). This process has been called different names in the literature, such as 'oxygen limited aerobic nitrification denitrification' (OLAND), 'deammonification' (DEMON) and 'completely autotrophic nitrogen removal over nitrite' (CANON) (Van Loosdrecht, 2008).…”

“…Bacteroidetes has been shown to be associated with the degradation of cellulose‐rich organic wastes such as plant residues and agricultural wastes (Dennehy et al, ), and sludge fermentation system (Huang, Dong, Wang, & Feng, ). Planctomycetes is critical strain in nitrogen cycle, and it can use NO2-‐N and NH4+‐N to generate nitrogen to obtain energy in anoxic environment (Wilsenach et al, ). During the operation process, enriched Proteobacteria explained why TB‐EFTW owned wonderful nitrogen removal efficiency.…”

“…Desta forma, dado todo o potencial descrito pelos FBPpraticidade e configuração, eles se apresentam como uma alternativa promissora em sistemas de tratamento para o Brasil, apesar de ainda existirem poucos trabalhos envolvendo Anammox e FBP (MAHMOUD et al 2011;DE ALMEIDA et al 2013;WILSENACH et al, 2014;SÁNCHEZ -GUILLÉN et al 2015;WANG et al 2015;RIBEIRO-BRESSANI et al, 2018).…”
