An update on the status of native and exotic freshwater fishes of Italy

Abstract: Summary An updated, corrected checklist of both native and established alien freshwater fish species in Italy is given based on molecular, morphological and biogeographical data. Some 12 native species, reported as conspecific with transalpine species in official Italian ichthylogical literature, are in fact endemics. Previous taxonomic confusion has resulted in the introduction of several alien species, either with official stockings or mixed in as impurities. Rehabilitated species include the cyprinids Scard… Show more

“…1). This considerably more structured phylogeographic 200 pattern than previously proposed may explain why taxonomists 201 have been unable to clearly distinguish putative P. lumarieul from 202 P. phoxinus (Bianco, 2014 in morphological (Talevski et al, 2009;Bogutskaya et al, 2012) and 216 molecular studies (Milosević et al, 2011;Tsoumani et al, 2014). 217 Moreover, we found three additional clades along the Adriatic river …”

“…Since the time of its first introduction, the growing economic interest in this salmonid has led to its massive spread throughout the country's entire inland water system (Orr u et al, 2010;Bianco, 2014). Nevertheless, even though it is stocked regularly across Italy (Lorenzoni et al, 2006;Ciutti et al, 2011), including in Sicily and Sardinia (Ferrito and Tigano, 1995;Orr u et al, 2010), there are currently only a few self-sustaining populations.…”
