An update on the CardioMEMS pulmonary artery pressure sensor

Abstract: Heart failure (HF) is one of the most important healthcare issues due to its prevalence, high morbidity and mortality, as well as its economic burden. A shift in the healthcare model towards reducing inpatient hospitalizations might have a significant impact on HF-related costs and quality of life. Recently, wireless monitoring has begun to be an essential part of the management in the patient with HF. The CardioMEMS HF system is one of the best examples pertaining to the success in this field. “…12 Several trials have analyzed outcomes of implantable hemodynamic monitoring in patients with heart failure, including the CardioMEMS Heart Sensor Allows Monitoring of Pressure to Improve Outcomes in NYHA Class III Heart Failure Patients (CHAMPION) trial, Pulmonary Artery Pressure by Implantable device Responding to Ultrasonic Signal (PAPIRUS) trial, Chronicle Offers Management to Patients with Advanced Signs and Symptoms of Heart Failure (COMPASS-HF) trial, and the ongoing Hemodynamic-GUIDEd management of Heart Failure (GUIDE-HF) trial. 13 In a meta-analysis of 14 randomized controlled trials investigating device monitoring in heart failure (including cardiac pressure sensors, implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICDs), impedance monitoring devices), there was no overall difference in heart failure-related admission rates or all-cause mortality, although in a subgroup analysis of only pressure sensor devices, there was a lower admission rate. 14 Electrophysiology is another subspecialty in which telehealth has enhanced the delivery of cardiovascular care.…”

“…These devices allow the physicians to remotely monitor pulmonary artery pressures and titrate therapy. For example, the CardioMEMS HF System (Abbott Medical, Inc., Abbott Park, IL, USA) consists of a sensor designed for permanent implantation into the distal pulmonary artery and provides hemodynamic information that can be wirelessly transmitted to health care providers [28]. Of note, in a randomized controlled trial, patients managed with this device had a significant reduction in HF-related hospitalizations (HR 0.72, 95% CI 0.6–0.85, p = 0.0002).…”
