An Update on Anemia in Less Developed Countries

Abstract: The highest prevalence of anemia exists in the developing world where its causes are multi-factorial. Anemia is responsible for significant morbidity and mortality, particularly in less developed countries (LDCs). Understanding causes of anemia and potential mechanisms are crucial to our ability to intervene to reduce this burden. In the past decade, our understanding of the etiology and mechanisms of anemia in LDCs has advanced significantly. This review will focus on recent advances in our understanding of t… Show more

“…Anemia representa uma alteração muitas vezes observada no período neonatal e na infância, que pode levar a significativas morbidade e mortalidade 1,2 . As causas são multifatoriais, mas, entre as mais freqüentes, encontram-se as doenças intrínsecas dos eritrócitos, especialmente as hemoglobinopatias [1][2][3] .…”

“…Iron deficiency is the cause of 75% of anaemia cases during pregnancy [5] [10]. HIV infection is also implicated with high prevalence of anaemia in sub-Saharan Africa [11] [12]. Iron deficiency anaemia affects the development of the nation by decreasing the cognitive and motor development of children and productivity of adults [5] [13].…”

“…1,2 The causes are multifactorial, but some of the most common diseases are intrinsic to the erythrocytes, especially the hemoglobinopathies. [1][2][3] These are the most common forms of hereditary hemolytic anemia. They are a group of autosomal abnormalities, the majority of which are recessive and which are characterized by the production of structurally abnormal hemoglobin (Hb) variants or by an imbalance in the rate of synthesis of the globin chains (thalassemias); less frequently, both phenotypes may be present in the same individual (concomitant reduced synthesis and structural variation).…”
