An Update and Errata for the Catalog of the Biting Midges of the World (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae)

Abstract: A list of corrections as well as the addition of new taxa described since Borkent & Dominiak (2020) published a catalog of the Ceratopogonidae of the world is provided. We record a further 70 extant and 7 fossil species and 2 new fossil genera. Beyond the summary provided by Borkent & Dominiak (2020, Table 1), the family now includes 6276 extant and 303 fossil species and 23 fossil genera. The number of species names that are nomina dubia is now 181.

“…Culicoides (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) are small biting midges. More than 1300 species are known [ 6 ] and several of these are vectors of arboviruses, protozoa and nematodes [ 24 , 38 ]. At least 40 species are associated with the transmission of around 50 arboviruses belonging to three families; the Peribunyaviridae (formerly Bunyaviridae [ 13 ]), Reoviridae, and Rhabdoviridae [ 25 ].…”

“…Culicoides Latreille, 1809 is one of the most species rich genera of the family Ceratopogonidae with approximately 1368 valid species, 32 subgenera, 38 species groups, and 176 unplaced species described worldwide (Borkent and Dominiak 2020); so far 76 species have been reported from India (Chatterjee et al 2020). Most female members of this genus are haematophagous and many species act as important vectors of pathogenic viruses, protozoans and filarial nematodes (Mellor et al 2000;Borkent 2005).…”
