Aim The Japanese herbal medicine, saireito, prevents the induction of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) expression and NO production, which is an indicator of liver protection. Saireito is composed of 12 kinds of crude drug. This study aimed to examine whether these crude drugs influence the induction of iNOS gene expression and if so, the mechanisms involved. Methods Hepatocytes were isolated from rats by collagenase perfusion and cultured. Each crude drug was added to primary cultured cells stimulated by interleukin (IL)‐1β. Induction of iNOS/NO production and its signaling pathway were analyzed. Results IL‐1β induced iNOS expression and NO production. Eleven of the saireito crude drugs inhibited NO production. Among them, Cinnamomi Cortex and Scutellariae Radix had higher effects than the others and inhibited the expression of iNOS and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)‐α. Transfection experiments revealed that both crude drugs reduced the activities of iNOS promoter transactivation (mRNA synthesis) and its mRNA stability. However, Cinnamomi Cortex and Scutellariae Radix showed that different mechanisms were involved in their inhibitory effects on two signaling pathways of iNOS induction, IκBα degradation/nuclear factor (NF)‐κB activation and Akt activation/type I IL‐1 receptor (IL‐1RI) upregulation. Conclusion Cinnamomi Cortex and Scutellariae Radix can prevent the induction of iNOS gene expression, in part through NF‐κB activation and IL‐1RI upregulation with different mechanisms, indicating that saireito containing both crude drugs may be a potential therapeutic treatment for injured livers.

Indian Tribal population is known for their self-sustainability, including their robust natural health and trivial lifestyle, further traditionally relied on medicinal plants throughout history. The evolutionary history of the ethnic-medicinal bulbous geophyte has long been a contention in monocot systematics. In India, the genus is represented by a species array. Moreover, the phylogeny delimitation amongst them is poorly defined to date. Phenolics, sterols, proteins and some other phytochemicals of Drimia have also been isolated for pharmacological and clinical studies that have strongly recommended their background effect of geographical positioning. Through several in vivo and in vitro studies, extracts derived from Drimia species demonstrated biological activity, including antifungal antibacterial, antiviral, anti-inflammatory antioxidant, and insecticidal properties. This review highlights the comprehensive phylogenetic analysis of Indian spp. of Drimia and the multi-omics-based approach for species delineation, the discovery of candidate genes and the development of plant-based drugs, as well as the long-term utilisation of plant pharmaceutical resources.

Coronaviruses (CoVs) are enveloped viruses that cause multiple respiratory and intestinal infections in humans and animals. 1 The term 'coronavirus' refers to the crown-like appearance of CoVs under electron microscope due to spike projections from the membrane. 2 These viruses were first described in the 1960s from patients with respiratory infections like the common cold. 3 Since then, several human coronaviruses (HCoVs) have been identified including the HCoV-Hong Kong University 1 (HKU1), HCoV-NL63; severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS)-CoV; and Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS)-CoV. 3 CoVs belong to the subfamilies Coronavirinae and Torovirinae of the family Coronaviridae in the order Nidovirales. 4 Based on phylogeny, they are divided into four genera as α-CoV, β-CoV, γ-CoV and δ-CoV. 5 The beta-CoV genus is further subdivided into four lineages (A, B, C, and D) 1 (Figure 1). Mammalian coronavirus include HCoV-229E and HCoV-NL63 which belong to the α-coronavirus class as well as HCoV-HKU1, SARS-CoV, MERS-CoV and HCoV-OC43 which are β-coronaviruses; while avian coronavirus is the γ-coronavirus and δ-coronavirus. 3 The novel coronavirus, 2019-nCoV, that caused the current global COVID-19 pandemic was first identified in December 2019 in the Wuhan region (Hubei Province) of China. Since then, the Coronavirus Study Group (CSG) of the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses has formally designated the virus as severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). 6
