An Uncommon Case of Renal Metastasis from Cervical Cancer

Abstract: Metastases to the kidney are a rare entity. Among solid tumors, it is known that lung and colorectal cancers can metastasize to the kidney. Renal metastases from cervical cancer are exceptional; only 12 cases were previously reported. We report a case of a right renal metastasis from a cervical squamous cell carcinoma, occurring in the context of a metastatic relapse two years after completing primary treatment.

“…However, they may present with cause symptoms that may simulate a renal-abscess-like flank pain, hematuria, or fever in some cases. [ 14 15 16 ] As far as we know, this is the only reported case of asymptomatic, extensive, and unusual visceral metastasis without pelvic or retroperitoneal lymph node involvement. This reestablishes the role of 18F-FDG PET/CT as a hybrid whole-body imaging.…”

“…Zhou et al [14] described 151 patients with renal metastasis, with the most common primary sites of disease being the lung (43.7%), colorectal area (10.6%), head and neck (6%), breast (5.3%), soft tissues (5.3%), and thyroid (5.3%). There are few cases of cervical cancer with metastases to the kidney [3].…”

“…Most patients with metastases to the kidney are asymptomatic, but up to 30% have evidence of hematuria. Most commonly, the diagnosis is based on incidental findings at the time of routine imaging [3]. Less commonly, such metastases may present as a renal mass and fever, suggesting a para-renal abscess [15].…”

“…In the autopsy series by Bracken et al,3 it was documented that cervical cancer metastasized to the kidney with the highest frequency (4.9%), followed by ovarian tumors (3.8%) and uterine tumors (2.9%). Renal involvement by cervical carcinoma in the clinical setting is rare 110–112. Some cases of renal metastases from uterine serous carcinoma,113 endometrial adenocarcinoma,114,115 uterine leiomyosarcoma,116 and ovarian granulosa cell tumor117 have also been reported.…”
