An ultra-high vacuum electrochemical flow cell for in situ/operando soft X-ray spectroscopy study

Abstract: An in situ flow electrochemical cell has been designed and fabricated to allow better seal under UHV chamber thus to achieve a good signal to noise ratio in fluorescence yield detection of X-ray absorption spectra for spectroelectrochemical study. The cell also stabilizes the thin silicon nitride membrane window in an effective manner so that the liquid cell remains intact during X-ray absorption experiments. With the improved design of the liquid cell, electrochemical experiments such as cyclic voltammetry ha… Show more

“…The cell was also adapted for the investigation of the interaction between water and graphene depending on the incidence X‐ray angle under static conditions . Such flow‐cell designs are being further optimized at ALS . Besides to Si 3 N 4 , polyimide films with deposited electrodes also served as membranes for such kind of cells …”

“…It is therefore of great interest to combine XAS and the liquid cell technique for in situ/operando investigations on liquid-based materials. [9][10][11][12] When a sample's thickness exceeds the penetration depth of soft X-rays, which is the case for the liquid cell adopted in this study, detection of XA spectra in the transmission mode is not applicable. Therefore, fluorescence yield (FY) or electron yield (EY) must be employed to acquire XA spectra.…”

“…X-ray region are easily measured in transmission or fluorescence mode due to the high transmission character of hard X-rays. On the other hand, in the soft X-ray region, several groups have developed electrochemical cells for XAS of light elements such as C, N, and O (1s), and Mn and Fe (2p) in fluorescence yields [222,223]. The in situ spatial measurement by scanning transmission X-ray microscope (STXM) is applied to the electrochemical reaction [224][225][226].…”
