An SEIR model of influenza A virus infection and reinfection within a farrow-to-finish swine farm

Abstract: Influenza A virus (IAV) in swine is a pathogen that causes a threat to the health as well as to the production of swine. Moreover, swine can spread this virus to other species including humans. The virus persists in different types of swine farms as evident in a number of studies. The core objectives of this study are (i) to analyze the dynamics of influenza infection of a farrow-to-finish swine farm, (ii) to explore the reinfection at the farm level, and finally (iii) to examine the effectiveness of two contr… Show more

“…For pigs reared in groups of relatively small sizes, stochastic frameworks have been privileged [43,[46][47][48][49], although deterministic approaches based on ordinary differential equations were also developed. The latter were either theoretical models with in depth mathematical analysis, providing insight into the model behaviour according to epidemiological assumptions or parameter values [50][51][52][53], or applied models with an accurate representation of the farm systems [54][55][56]. For illustrative purpose, the issue of on-farm persistence of SIV represent a quarter of the selected articles.…”

“…For illustrative purpose, the issue of on-farm persistence of SIV represent a quarter of the selected articles. The set of companion papers by Reynolds et al [56] and Etbaigha et al [54] dealt with the spread of influenza virus in breeding and farrow-to-finish pig herds using deterministic modelling frameworks. The herd structure was described in details accounting for animal movements between different barns.…”

“…Human contact affects the epidemics of infectious diseases [11]. Generally, infectious, exposed, and recovered individuals are the core factors affecting the epidemic efficiency of infectious diseases [12]. Effective policies can reduce the transmission efficiency of infectious diseases by blocking infectious areas, collecting medical resources to cure patients, and suggesting the public to take personal protective measures (such as wearing masks and washing hands) [13].…”
