Abstract:In this paper we review the proposals in the literature to optimise bus rapid transit (BRT) system operation, which are based on bus scheduling and focused on varying the times between each bus departure of the different bus routes. We propose a mathematical model that adapts elements of the above proposals and incorporates novel elements accounting for the features of TransMilenio, which is Bogot´a's most important mass transportation system and one of the biggest BRT systems in the world. This paper is a revised and expanded version of a paper entitled 'First approach to the optimization of Bogotá's TransMilenio BRT system' presented at FORS40 -Finnish Operations Research 40th Anniversary Workshop,
