An overview on the seven pathogenic human coronaviruses

Abstract: Summary To date, seven human coronaviruses (HCoVs) have been detected: HCoV‐NL63, HCoV‐229E, HCoV‐HKU1, HCoV‐OC43, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS‐CoV), Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS‐CoV) and SARS‐CoV‐2. Four of these viruses, including HCoV‐NL63, ‐229E, ‐HKU1 and ‐OC43, usually cause mild‐to‐moderate respiratory diseases with a seasonal pattern. Since 2000, three new HCoVs have emerged with a significant mortality rate. Although SARS‐CoV and MERS‐CoV caused an epidemic… Show more

“…Three new HCoVs have recently emerged with a significant mortality rate. Despite the fact that all HCoVs share similarities in viral replication, they differ in their accessory proteins, incubation period and pathogenicity (Modified by Kesheh et al, 2021 ).…”

“…The cellular plasma membrane contains subdomains of lipid rafts composed of cholesterol and glycosphingolipids [41]. SARS-CoV-2 and SARS-CoV use the angiotensin-converting enzyme-2 (ACE2) receptor for cellular entry [42]. Interactions between the ACE2 receptor and the spike protein are facilitated by cholesterol-rich Clathrins, caveolins, and dynamin in lipid rafts play an important role in viral entry [43].…”

“…COVID-19 is caused by SARS-CoV-2, a beta-coronavirus of lineage B. It encodes four structural proteins: [1] the spike-surface glycoprotein [2] , the small envelope protein [3] , the membrane glycoprotein, and [4] the nucleocapsid protein, as well as several nonstructural proteins; however, HE is encoded by other betacoronaviruses in lineage A, including HCoV-OC43, HCoV-HKU1, BCoV, and MHV [2] , [8] .…”
