An overview on the protective effects of ellagic acid against heavy metals, drugs, and chemicals

Zahra Jamshidi,
Ali Roohbakhsh,
Gholamreza Karimi

Abstract: Ellagic acid (EA) is a polyphenol extracted from many plants. EA modulates inflammatory mediators via antioxidant mechanisms, such as catalase (CAT) activities, superoxide dismutase (SOD), enhancement, increase in glutathione (GSH), and lipid peroxidation (LPO) suppression. EA has anti‐apoptotic properties that are thought to be mediated by regulating the expression of B‐cell lymphoma 2 (Bcl‐2), Bcl‐2‐associated X protein (Bax), and caspase‐3. In this article, we surveyed the literature dealing with the protec… Show more

“…EA reduces lipid peroxidation, serves as a ROS scavenger, and positively affects mediators that are pro-oxidant and anti-inflammatory. Treatment with EA could inhibit Cd-induced oxidative injury in rat primary astrocytes [42]. EA dramatically boosted the activity of antioxidant enzymes, such as GPx, SOD, and CAT, in rats exposed to Hg.…”

“…[39][40][41]. Results of a recent study have shown that EA can alleviate the damaging effects of heavy metals, especially those of Pb, on the human body [42]. Oral EA treatment in rats has been shown to provide protection against Pb-induced nephrotoxicity by suppressing oxidative stress, inflammation, apoptosis, and autophagy [43].…”

“…It has been reported that functional properties of EA towards the various action towards like antioxidant enzymes (8, 9). like catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), and glutathione-S-transferase (GST) (51, 52). In another study demonstrated suppression of cyclooxygenase (COX-2) and nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-кB) (53).…”
