An Overview on ANS Methods: Who Is a Dominant for the Seamless Vertical Handover Decision through Heterogeneous Networks

Abstract: The Next Generation Wireless Systems (NGWSs) consists of heterogeneous wireless access networks such as UMTS, Wi-Fi, WiMAX and LTE where Mobile Users (MUs) can access these technologies and services using a single device. This device is equipped with multiple radio interfaces include devices capable of supporting multiple Radio Access Technologies (RATs) by incorporating several interface cards and appropriate software for switching between multiple access systems (Vertical Handover (VHO)). The Access Network … Show more

“…In this category, plenty of VHO approaches have been proposed in the literature. In [29], [30] and [31], seventeen, fifteen and ninety nine VHO approaches have been surveyed, respectively. It has been noticed in [29][30][31] that the VHO approaches are mostly in the practical where the evolution methods in these surveys are various between real environment, testbed, simulation experiment and analytical modeling.…”

“…The reveals that lack of network parameter greatly influence the performance of vertical handover process. Also literature by Khattab [ 17 ] presented a survey on MIH(Media Independent Handover and ANDSF(Access Network Discovery and Selection Function) schemes for vertical handover. ANDSF protocol proposed in literature [ 18 ] works with RAT information to perform handover decision.…”

“…After processing the new information, PCRF can decide whether there are flows which are worth offloading (i.e., to be moved between available access networks) or not. If yes, the PCRF sends a Mobility Update Request (MUR) message that triggers the ANDSF to discover the current radio environment of UE based on[42,43] (i.e., whether it is capable of a handover from the radio resources point of view). This radio discovery is done by the Handover Discover Request (HDR) message in our proposal.…”
