Purpose The literature on warehouse performance assessments is mainly focussed on the efficiency and effectiveness of an action or activity due to customer demand and tailored fulfilment, with less attention being given to the performance measurement of each function of the warehouse and its overall productivity. Therefore, this study was aimed at revising the key warehouse performance metrics to a set of productivity measurement indicators that can be adopted internationally for benchmarking productivity performance. Design/methodology/approach A literature review and semi-structured survey questionnaire were used for this study. The importance of warehouse productivity performance was reviewed to revamp the measurement indicators. Through the use of a directed content analysis and descriptive analysis, an extensive study was carried out to analyze existing warehouse productivity indicators. Findings The findings of this study provide comprehensive references for practitioners and academicians for improving the classification of productivity measurements from existing key performance metrics for warehousing. Also, this paper highlights the warehouse resources related to the respective warehouse operation activities. Research limitations/implications The study was limited to productivity performance indicators adapted from Staudt et al. (2015). Furthermore, the samples for this study comprised Malaysian academicians and practitioners in the related field. The findings can be adapted on a global scale as this study implemented general warehouse operation processes. Originality/value Consequently, the contributions of this study are that it provides relevant benchmarks for key productivity performance indicators in the warehousing sector that has worldwide applicability and the developed model provides a conceptual platform from which further theoretical and empirical developments can be carried out.

The retail problem of slotting refers to the assignment of stock keeping units (SKUs) to the available storage locations in a distribution centre (DC). Generally, the expected total distance travelled by stock pickers during an order consolidation and the resulting level of congestion experienced within aisle racking are common considerations when making these assignments. These criteria give rise to a bi-objective optimisation model with the aim of identifying multiple stock setups that achieve acceptable tradeoffs between minimising the criteria on expectation. A mathematical framework is established in this paper, based on these two criteria, for evaluating the effectiveness of a given stock setup. In the framework, a stock picker's movement between various storage locations is modelled as a Markov chain in order to quantify his or her expected travel distance, while a closed queuing network model is used to devise a suitable measure of congestion. This optimisation model framework forms the basis of a flexible decision support system (DSS) for the purpose of discovering highquality stock assignment trade-off solutions for inventory managers. The DSS is applied to a special case study involving data from a real DC, and the desirability of the recommended stock configurations is compared with that currently implemented within the DC. 75

Evolutionary Greenhouse Layout Optimization for Rapid and Safe Robot Navigation

There has been a rapid increase in demand for premium and safe agricultural products. Protected systems, such as greenhouses, are being adopted to meet demand. Ease in environmental regulation required for optimal plant growth is one of the advantages of protected systems. However, drawbacks such as poor ventilation in greenhouses can be fatal to the human workforce. This has led to the development of robots for hazardous tasks. Considering mobile robots are required to navigate down every aisle to perform a task in a greenhouse, and it is difficult to predict at which point the robot will need to return to the start point, to offload or refill for transportation and spraying schedules, respectively or battery charges. It will be commercially constraining to manufacture robots for every greenhouse specification. Efficient navigation can be done through path planning or layout design. In this paper, the greenhouse layout optimization problem was formulated to find optimal points on each bed to create an access path that would enable a reduction in the total travel time from all points in the greenhouse to the base point. The optimization problem was solved using differential evolution (DE), an evolutionary algorithm. Furthermore, we considered: 1) required space for inter-bed and rotary robot navigation; 2) standard bed specification; 3) area of the greenhouse; and 4) base point for starting and terminating navigation. The applicability of the proposed method was demonstrated by carrying out the experimental simulations on several greenhouse sizes.
