An overview of various faults detection methods in synchronous generators

Abstract: Synchronous generator (SG) plays a vital and critical role in the power system by supplying electric power to consumers. Various faults in SGs can cause some catastrophic events such as power disruption or blackout. These faults can be classified into two electrical and mechanical faults. Short circuit in stator windings and field winding are electrical fault while bearing, static/dynamic eccentricity, and broken damper bars faults are mechanical one. Unlike the induction machines, there are no much researches… Show more

“…Accurate and efficient modelling of BLSGs is necessary for power system analysis specially in aircraft/ship power systems and power generating sets to investigate the dynamic performance, improve the reliability, control and protection purposes [14,15], condition monitoring [16,17], modelling of converters [18,19], analysis of rectification topologies [20,21], etc. Such systems result from the interconnection of several nonlinear and time varying components with a large variety of dynamic interactions.…”

“…This manuscript mainly studies flux-based methods in IMs and PMMs. The readers are referred to [19] in the case of synchronous generators. The rest of the study is organised as follows: Section 2 discusses the theory of flux generation in electrical machines.…”

“…Rotor eccentricity, rotor bending, inter-turn short circuit, and inter-slot short circuit are the primary faults in the rotor. Multi-phase short circuit, singlephase short circuit, inter-turn short circuit, and saturation are the primary faults in the stator [7,8]. Also, a reduction of the cross-sectional area of windings wires is a fault that can be occurred in both stator and rotor (field and damper) windings.…”

“…Model-based fault detection approaches are used when the system models in healthy and faulty conditions are available [10]. A brief review of various methods for modeling of SGs has been presented in [8]. A model-based fault detection methodology has been used to diagnose air-gap eccentricity and inter-turn short circuits in the SG [11,12].…”
