a b s t r a c tThe Dynamic Recursive Unified Internet Design (DRUID) is a future Internet design that unifies overlay networks with conventional layered network architectures. DRUID is based on the fundamental concept of recursion, enabling a simple and direct network architecture that unifies the data, control, management, and security aspects of the current Internet, leading to a more trustworthy network. DRUID's architecture is based on a single recursive block that can adapt to support a variety of communication functions, including parameterized mechanisms for hard/soft state, flow and congestion control, sequence control, fragmentation and reassembly, compression, encryption, and error recovery. This recursion is guided by the structure of a graph of translation tables that help compartmentalize the scope of various functions and identifier spaces, while relating these spaces for resource discovery, resolution, and routing. The graph also organizes persistent state that coordinates behavior between individual data events (e.g., coordinating packets as a connection), among different associations (e.g., between connections), as well as helping optimize the recursive discovery process through caching, and supporting prefetching and distributed pre-coordination. This paper describes the DRUID architecture composed of these three parts (recursive block, translation tables, persistent state), and highlights its goals and benefits, including unifying the data, control, management, and security planes currently considered orthogonal aspects of network architecture.

Increasing application demands together with the modem network technology towards gigabit speeds require new adequate transport systems. The transport subsystem PATROCLOS (mp'allel rranspQrt subsystem for !!elJ based high speed netwQrk.l!) is based on a modular protocol architecture with a high degree of inherent parallelism. The primary goal of PA TROCLOS was to allow efficient implementations of transport oriented protocols on multiprocessor architectures combined with specialized hardware for very time critical functions. Furthermore, the protocol architecture should offer an enhanced and flexible transport service to support a wide variety of applications providing a large set of different configurable protocol functions. Other important aspects of the transport subsystem are its efficient operation on top of modem cellbased high-speed networks such as ATM. This paper describes the P ATROCLOS protocol architecture with special emphasis on the integrated protocol functions and mechanisms. The protocol architecture allows an easy integration of several kinds of transport service interfaces. Two different types of service interfaces (OSI95 [1], F-CSS interface [2]) are discussed. Moreover, the paper shows the advantages of the modular approach for parallel protocol processing by performance results of a multiprocessor implementation. The performance results show significant better throughput and speed-up values than other parallel protocol implementations.

Abstract. Traditional end-system protocols are not able to support the wide range of Quality of Service (QoS) requirements of existing and emerging distributed multimedia applications on top ofcurrent networks. The aim of protocol configuration in Da Capo (Dynamic Configuration of Protocols) is to combine fine granular software and hardware building blocks at runtime in such a manner that the resulting protocol configuration fulfills the application requirements and needs as less resources as possible. Main features of Da Capo include a formal model, a new approach for specifying application requirements as objective functions, and a unified module interface that allows syntactically unconstrained configuration of software and hardware building blocks. The performance evaluation of the prototype implementation demonstrates that the overhead introduced by the flexible approach is marginal compared to modules that access multiple bytes in each packet. Thus, decreasing protocol complexity by configuring appropriate protocols distinctly increases protocol performance. Furthermore, the flexible approach is able to support the broad range of QoS requirements and is open for future developments.
