An Overview of Some Biopesticides and Their Importance in Plant Protection for Commercial Acceptance

Abstract: Biopesticides are natural, biologically occurring compounds that are used to control various agricultural pests infesting plants in forests, gardens, farmlands, etc. There are different types of biopesticides that have been developed from various sources. This paper underscores the utility of biocontrol agents composed of microorganisms including bacteria, cyanobacteria, and microalgae, plant-based compounds, and recently applied RNAi-based technology. These techniques are described and suggestions are made fo… Show more

“…More than 1400 biopesticide registrations have been made worldwide [ 227 ], although a much lower number of registrations are considered in Europe due to the complex regulatory system in the EU. Besides, more than 200 biopesticide products are currently available in the North American market, compared to approximately 60 in the EU [ 228 ].…”

“…The interaction between the plants and the microbes antedate history, and they face each other constantly for various purposes, such as in the form of biocontrol agents [1], arbuscular mycorrhiza [2,3] and as many other mutual beneficiaries or pathogens since their origin. Several of these microorganisms cause various diseases in different crop plants creating havoc and enormous economic loss by compromising crop productivity and yield [4,5].…”
