The purpose of this prospective and anatomic study was to describe the ultrasonographic anatomy of the kidneys, urinary bladder, adrenal glands, spleen, liver, gall bladder, and gastrointestinal tract in healthy juvenile eastern grey kangaroos (Macropus giganteus). As ultrasonographic descriptions are lacking in marsupial species, it was also conducted to develop a systematic approach for abdominal ultrasonographic evaluation in the kangaroo and to provide preliminary quantitative and qualitative references. Ten macropod cadavers (eight eastern grey kangaroos and two swamp wallabies (Wallabia bicolor)) were used for initial dissections and preliminary ultrasonographic examinations. Seven eastern grey kangaroos (four females and three males; mean mass 18 kg (±4.5)) were ultrasonographically examined under heavy sedation in lateral recumbency. The gaseous forestomach occupied a large proportion of the entire abdomen ultrasonographically; therefore, the majority of cranial landmarks were based on an intercostal approach comparable to a deep-chested dog. Compared to domestic species, ultrasonographic differences in anatomy include the forestomach, hindstomach, liver orientation, distinguishable adrenal glands, splenic branching, and epipubic bones, all of which were described. The study was limited by the small sample size (7) and weight range (14-25 kg). The systematic approach and description of the normal ultrasonographic anatomy of the abdominal organs in the eastern grey kangaroo should provide a foundation for the ultrasonographic diagnosis and interpretation of abdominal disease in this species.

У статті представлені матеріали щодо історії розвитку ультрасонографії у ветеринарній практиці, наведений аналіз літератури щодо дослідження печінки, селезінки та підшлункової залози, вказуються перспективи методики дослідження в майбутньому. Ультрасонографія черевної поро-жнини у тварин вперше застосовувалась переважно для діагностики вагітності. На сьогодні зазначена методика є важливою діагностичною технікою у ветеринарній медицині, яка застосовуєтьсядля вивчення більшості нормальних та патологічно змінених структур у тварини, забезпечуючишвидкий, неінвазивний спосіб доповнення інформації, отриманої в результаті клінічного обстеженнята рентгенографії. Ультразвукове дослідження засноване на принципі ехолокації, хвилі, що посила-ються датчиком, проходять крізь тканини організму, відображаються та розшифровуються апа-ратом і перетворюються в зображення, яке дає змогу фахівцю ветеринарної медицини оцінитистан внутрішніх органів, тканин і порожнин. Зі збільшенням застосування ветеринарними лікарямиультрасонографічних досліджень у практиці стає зрозуміло, що УЗД є ц інним з асобом в иявленняураження органів черевної порожнини. Оцінка печінки є однією з головних переваг застосування уль-трасонографії черевної порожнини у тварини. Показання включають гепатомегалію, жовтяницю,асцит, підозру на розрив діафрагми, втрату ваги та можливі метастази в печінку. На сьогодні удо-сконалюються та доповнюються методи сонографічних досліджень. Подальше впровадження упрактику та поглиблене вивчення патологій в зазначеній ділянці за допомогою ультрасонографіїдасть змогу об’єктивно встановити стан черевної порожнини та її органів у тварини і оцінититяжкість перебігу хвороби. Впровадження високоякісних, портативних діагностичних ультразвуко-вих апаратів продовжили цей розвиток і попит на ультрасонографію, зважаючи на його діагности-чну цінність, продовжує зростати. Проведений аналіз літератури та доступних інтернет-джерелдав нам змогу оцінити сучасний стан розвитку сонографії у ветеринарній практиці та перспективиподальшого розвитку діагностики стану печінки, селезінки та підшлункової залози, вказати сферипотенційного розвитку методики в майбутньому.

We present a novel method for demonstrating the physical principles of ultrasound imaging at a level suitable for educational programmes up to the university level, using a simple mechanical model that is very inexpensive and accessible to a broad variety of educational institutions. The method revolves around the use of one or two steel springs that can be extended on a flat surface. The spring represents a tissue and the longitudinal wave traveling along the spring represents the propagation of an ultrasound wave in tissue. This method allows students to gain direct experience with wave propagation, reflection and transmission in tissue as well as insight into the physical processes underlying ultrasound imaging. These include equally the ultrasound diagnostic device measurement of the depth of various tissue boundaries, modelled as a simple measurement of the time elapsed between the emission of a wave and the detection of a wave reflected from an object intersecting the spring. An ultrasound device probes the boundary between a formation (an organ or a lesion) and surrounding tissue by registering the amplitude of reflection on the formation, which is proportional to a difference in acoustic impedance between the formation and the tissue. The amplitude of the reflected wave in our apparatus is also proportional to acoustic impedance between the spring and an object like a plastic ruler intersecting the spring, whose stiffness and consequently acoustic impedance can be adjusted by its offset. It is also easy to clearly see the reflected wave on the boundary of two coupled springs (two tissues) with different acoustic impedances. We represent a series of representative measurements using our mechanical model demonstrating its good precision.
