An Overview of Radio Resource Management in Relay-Enhanced OFDMA-Based Networks

Abstract: Although a number of publications have highlighted the important and challenging issues involved in designing RRM algorithms for OFDMA networks, only recently a number of papers have investigated relay-enhanced OFDMA-based multicellular networks. By and large, the literature indicates that these issues constitute a hot research topic that will continue to attract interest. This paper provides a survey of the current literature on OFDMA networks enhanced with decode-and-forward relaying and provides their link … Show more

“…Coordinated transmission schemes can improve the capacity near the cell edge, however at the expense of more radio resources used (e.g., 2-3 BS transmitting) and a signaling overhead and less scheduling freedom of choice, so the outcome is questionable. Multihop techniques (using decode-and-forward relay nodes, RN) are reasonable to increase cell edge capacity or coverage [2], [3] but with (low) additional cost and gains typically below 50% [4].…”

“…Recent reports clearly state this dilemma of demand exceeding capacity [1]- [3]. Relay nodes [4], [5] or femtocells will only postpone the time shortly at which demand exceeds supply [6]. Clearly on average the customer is not willing to pay more than he does now for his tariff plan.…”

“…The requirements by the ITU [2] are ambitious so that various advanced techniques must be considered, e.g., MIMO, CoMP, and fractional frequency reuse. Multihop techniques (using decode-and-forward relay nodes, RN) have also been standardized to either increase cell edge capacity, coverage, or both [3], [4].…”

“…The result is indeed a higher spectral efficiency. The dilemma between throughput capacity and fairness is known quite well [4].…”
