Aim:The objective of the present systematic review was to assess the outcomes of Hall technique (HT) on primary carious molars and compared it with the conventional dental restorations. Materials and methods: The systematic review was registered with Prospero registry (CRD42015020445) to answer the following research question: Is HT a better restorative option compared to other techniques for restoration of carious primary molars? In addition to exploring various health sciences databases, hand search was also done using following key terms in different permutations: (Hall technique OR Hall's technique OR preformed metal crown OR stainless steel crown) AND (caries OR carious molar OR deciduous tooth OR baby tooth OR milk tooth OR primary tooth). The outcome of interest was success of the restoration achieved with either method. Results: Five studies were included (two RCTs, one quasi-experimental trial, and two retrospective). A total of 1775 teeth were assessed, of which 1325 teeth were restored using HT. The retrospective studies showed no difference between HT and other methods whereas the RCTs and quasi-experimental favored HT over other treatment modalities. Meta-analysis significantly favored HT over conventional restorations [risk ratio 5.55 (3.31-9.30)] (p value ≤ 0.001). Conclusion: HT appeared demonstrated higher success and significantly outperformed the conventional restorations.

Objectives: Despite the increasing popularity of pediatric dental treatments under general anesthesia, information is scarce regarding occlusal changes in patients receiving stainless steel crowns (SSCs) under general anesthesia. This study sought to compare canine overlap before and after general anesthesia in children receiving SSCs. In case of a change, the possibility of returning to the preoperative state and the time required for this process were also evaluated. Materials and Methods: This interventional, before-and-after study was performed on 60 children between 2 to 7 years of age requiring dental treatment under general anesthesia. The contact point of the most prominent area of the maxillary primary canine and mandibular primary canine was marked before and immediately after general anesthesia and at one and two weeks postoperatively. The change in canine overlap was analyzed using repeated measures analysis of variance (ANOVA) and linear regression test. Results: Canine overlap significantly decreased immediately after general anesthesia (P<0.05). The mean bite opening was 0.51±0.22 mm at the site of the right canine and 0.50±0.185 mm at the site of the left canine. These values returned to their normal preoperative state after one week (P<0.05). Repeated measures ANOVA showed significant differences in this respect between the time points (P=0.002). Conclusions: The occlusion and vertical dimension of pediatric patients may change following dental treatment under general anesthesia; the magnitude of change in canine overlap may vary depending on the class of occlusion and number of SSCs placed. These changes are temporary and often resolve within a week.

As lesões cariosas ainda são um problema de saúde bucal enfrentado pela população, contudo, técnicas mais simples têm sido empregadas para a gestão da doença cárie. A técnica Hall Technique (HT) consiste em uma abordagem menos invasiva, utilizando coroas metálicas pré-fabricadas em primeiros molares decíduos, sem o uso de anestésico local, preparo do elemento dentário e sem remoção do tecido cariado. Este estudo objetiva mostrar o uso da HT, elucidar alguns possíveis problemas relacionados com o uso de coroas metálicas, demonstrar a relação custo-benefício e a aceitação dos pais e filhos. Consiste em uma revisão, com busca por artigos indexados em bases de dados como PubMed, ResearchGate, Scielo e American Dental Association. Os resultados obtidos nos artigos publicados recentemente sobre a técnica Hall revela que a HT é considerada uma opção restauradora prometendo alta aceitabilidade e longevidade, com baixa taxa de falhas para o gerenciamento de molares decíduos cariados comparado com tratamentos convencionais. Conclui-se que a HT é eficiente ao proposto de reabilitação através de técnica atraumática em elementos com bastante destruição coronária.
