An overview of occupational noise-induced hearing loss among workers: epidemiology, pathogenesis, and preventive measures

Abstract: Occupational noise-induced hearing loss (ONIHL) is the most prevalent occupational disease in the world. The goal of this study was to review the epidemiology, pathogenesis, and preventive measures of ONIHL among workers and provide evidence for the implementation of control measures. Literature studies were identified from the MEDLINE, PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Google Scholar using the search terms “noise-induced hearing loss” “prevalence”, “pathogenesis”, and “preventive measures”. The articles rev… Show more

“…Additionally, soundproof wall is one of the measures for residents living around highways. For workers in noisy workplaces, the preventive measures against noise include periodic noise exposure monitoring in workplaces, engineering and administrative controls, personal hearing protection and routine audiometric examinations or health education before permanent damage to the inner ear ( 51 ).…”

“…NIHL is often caused by long-term occupational exposure to noise [ 2 ]. The prevalence of hearing loss due to noise varies from 11.2% to 58% globally [ 3 ]. Hearing impairment can cause communication difficulty, social isolation, emotional depression, and cognitive decline, which can result in health problems, increase hospitalization, affect quality of life, and increase the burden on the family and society [ 4 ].…”

“…The review by Mazitova et al [34] summarized five reviews (including Lie et al [31•]) and two original studies [20,35] and came to similar conclusions. Chen et al [32] summarized 108 studies on the epidemiology, pathogenesis, and prevention of NIHL published between 2000 and 2020, finding the raw prevalence of occupational NIHL ranged from 11.2% in a group of South African gold miners (average age not reported) [36] to 58% in a group of construction workers in the USA (average age = 59.2 years) [37].…”
