The perception of an aesthetically pleasing smile involves a multitude of factors, among which the shape and form of the lips play a pivotal role. Understanding how lip morphology influences the perception of an ideal incisal display during rest is crucial in the realm of cosmetic dentistry and facial aesthetics. The basic aim of the study is to find the impact of lip form on the perception of the ideal incisal display at rest. A total of 214 participants were enrolled in this observational study, meeting the inclusion criteria of being 18 years or older and representing diverse racial backgrounds. Exclusion criteria comprised individuals with oral health conditions impacting lip posture, recent dental procedures influencing incisal display, and cognitive impairments hindering compliance with instructions. Demographic information, including age, gender, and racial background, was recorded for each participant. Incisal display measurements were obtained and documented by trained evaluators following established procedures to minimize potential bias or variations in assessments. Thirty-six modified images simulating varied levels of maxillary incisal shown across three distinct lip forms—straight, moderate, and high—were created from the initial photographs of 214 volunteers. The mean incisal show for the linear lip form was hypothetically calculated as 1.5 mm (SD = 0.3), 2.3 mm (SD = 0.4) for the moderate lip form, and 3.0 mm (SD = 0.5) for the high lip form. Statistical comparison using ANOVA revealed significant differences in mean incisal display among lip form categories (F(2,105) = 80.72, p < 0.001). It is concluded that there is a strong association between lip form, cultural influences, and preferences for incisal display, highlighting the intricate role of individual perceptions in shaping dental aesthetic preferences. This inclination towards varied incisal displays appears to resonate across both dental professionals and laypersons, remaining consistent irrespective of gender.

O objetivo do estudo é revisar a eficácia dessa abordagem terapêutica, discutir suas indicações e contraindicações, analisar os resultados clínicos e funcionais em pacientes com SAOS. Os resultados clínicos e funcionais apresentam uma redução significativa na gravidade dos sintomas da SAOS após a cirurgia ortognática, com muitos pacientes relatando melhorias na qualidade do sono e na função cognitiva. No entanto, são destacadas as complicações potenciais associadas ao procedimento, enfatizando a importância de uma abordagem multidisciplinar e individualizada para cada caso. Por fim, as considerações finais sublinham a importância da colaboração entre diferentes especialidades médicas para garantir o sucesso do tratamento da SAOS. A cirurgia ortognática emerge como uma ferramenta valiosa quando integrada a uma abordagem abrangente que inclui outras modalidades terapêuticas e considera as necessidades individuais de cada paciente. Essas conclusões destacam a relevância contínua da cirurgia ortognática no manejo da SAOS e ressaltam a necessidade de pesquisas adicionais para aprimorar ainda mais as diretrizes de tratamento e otimizar os resultados para os pacientes.

Background: Lip enhancement continues to be one of the most frequently requested minimally invasive cosmetic treatments. Balancing anatomical considerations and objective measurements with individuals’ differences in aesthetics preferences can present unique challenges. Objectives: Identify key characteristics that contribute to lip and perioral aesthetics and providing practical insights into the real-world use of the recently published Lip and Perioral Assessment Scale. Methods: This work comprised four stages. The establishment of an International multidisciplinary collaborative group of eight experts to discuss current clinical practices with respect to lip and perioral enhancement. A practitioner survey to assess the experiences, perceptions, and opinions of a wider group of clinicians (N=40). A hybrid focus group, chaired by two of the experts, to establish considerations best practice approaches to patient assessment in the Asia-Pacific Region. Practical application of a Lip and Perioral Assessment Scale. Results: Consensus opinion from experienced injectors in the Asia Pacific Region supports the need to consider a wide variety of factors contributing to smile anatomy and aesthetics. Best practices approaches encompass (1) accounting for underlying structures, soft tissues and the impact of aging on smile anatomy, (2) understanding the relative contributions of the teeth and gingiva, lip proportions and skin quality to smile aesthetics and (3) the value of a systematic approach to patient assessment. Conclusions: Clear communication between patients and injectors is vital to establish achievable goals and realistic expectations. Systematic assessment that accounts for a wider array of variables than lip volume may facilitate a more individually tailored approach.
