Unfortunately, as anxiety is often synonymously mentioned with depression, the studies focusing solely on anxiety during pregnancy are not as robust as those in the field of depression are. In this work, we provide an overview of what is currently known about general anxiety during pregnancy, pregnancy-related anxiety and the potential impacts anxiety could have on post-partum care. “…The scientific evidence has established an association of pregnancy and the risk for mental health problems due to hormonal, psychosocial, and familial role changes (Araji et al, 2020 ; Dunkel Schetter & Tanner, 2012 ). Systematic reviews show that antepartum anxiety and depression are prevalent among pregnant women with a global prevalence of 22.9% and 15–65%, respectively (Dadi et al, 2020 ; Dennis et al, 2017 ).…”

“…Pregnant women are usually subject to worries and fears about their pregnancy and its outcome. Concerns regarding the unpredictability of childbirth, anticipated medical interventions, or complication during birth (Araji et al, 2020 ) led women to experience additional fears and exacerbated anxiety levels at the end of pregnancy. Additionally, the current evidence indicates that maternal wellbeing and foetal development are negatively influenced by maternal mental health problems.…”

“…This increase in activity, if it continues to occur, will cause the production of cortisol to increase, which can damage neuron cells in the hypothalamus so that hypothalamic atrophy occurs and as a result, can give rise to cognitive disorders, for example anxiety. 4,5 Anxiety in pregnant women in the third trimester needs to be treated because it can influence the physical and psychic of the mother and fetus. Anxiety can affect the hypothalamus to stimulate the endocrine glands that regulate the pituitary gland so that it will cause an increase in the production of stress hormones including Adreno Corticotropin Hormone (ACTH), cortisol, catecholamines, ß-Endorphins, Growth Hormone (GH), prolactin and Luteinizing Hormone (LH) / Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH).…”
