An Overview of Vibrio vulnificus and Vibrio parahaemolyticus

Abstract: The Vibrionaceae are environmentally ubiquitous to estuarine waters. Two species in particular, V. vulnificus and V. parahaemolyticus, are important human pathogens that are transmitted by the consumption of contaminated molluscan shellfish. This document provides a comprehensive review of the current state of knowledge about these important foodborne disease agents. Topics include the epidemiology of human disease; biotypes and virulence factors; cultural and molecular-based detection methods; phenotyping and… Show more

“…Environmental parameters, such as temperature, salinity or plankton abundance have an effect on Vibrio spp. communities and abundances (Blackwell and Oliver, 2008;Caburlotto et al, 2010;Drake et al, 2007;Martinez-Urtaza et al, 2008;Thompson et al, 2004b;Turner et al, 2009;Vezzulli et al, 2009). Vezzulli et al (2010) and Schets et al (2010) identified seawater temperature as a key factor influencing the presence of Vibrio spp., for instance it is well documented that V. parahaemolyticus favours warmer water temperatures (Sobrinho et al, 2010).…”

“…Infections caused by V. vulnificus show different clinical presentations, of which the primary septicemia, wound infections, and gastroenteritis are the most prevalent 16 . Vibrio vulnifi cus infections are serious and appear to be rare in Brazil, although there is little information concerning the actual incidence of these infections.…”
