An Overview of Airborne Contact Dermatitis

Abstract: Airborne-contact dermatitis (ABCD) is a form of contact dermatitis which originates from air borne allergens like dust, sprays, pollens etc. ABCD is most commonly seen secondary to plant antigens especially to compositae family. However, recently cases of ABCD due to non-plant allergens have also been reported. This review focuses on common air borne allergens/irritants, clinical manifestations, diagnosis and management of air borne contact dermatitis.

“…Other body sites with which the nails frequently come in contact can be affected, such as the face, back, and eyes [ 11 ]. Acetone may also cause an allergic airborne contact dermatitis (ABCD), presenting a generalized skin reaction [ 12 ]. Although a substantial amount of spray-on fabric diluent evaporates before it reaches the surface, factors such as distance from spray point, diameter of spray nozzle, amount of diluent, and spray time can influence the degree of exposure a consumer has to the diluent [ 2 ].…”

“…Airborne contact dermatitis is an acute or chronic dermatoses predominantly affecting exposed parts of the body and caused by allergens/irritants present in the atmosphere. 1 The agents commonly responsible for this type of dermatitis are either the plants whose components such as pollen, trichromes or dry leaf fragments can get airborne, or the industrial agents which pollute the air from the factories. 2 Allergens can be present in the form of dust, sprays, pollen, volatile chemicals by airborne fumes or droplets, which settle on the exposed skin of the body.…”
