An Overview for Markov Decision Processes in Queues and Networks

Abstract: Markov decision processes (MDPs) in queues and networks have been an interesting topic in many practical areas since the 1960s. This paper Provides a detailed overview on this topic and tracks the evolution of many basic results. Also, this paper summarizes several interesting directions in the future research. We hope that this overview can shed light to MDPs in queues and networks, and also to their extensive applications in various practical areas. One main purpose of this paper is to provide an overview for… Show more

“…Model-based approaches are those where a mathematical model of packet flows within a queue is considered. In classical literature of queuing theory, in particular applied to SDNs, most of the approaches are based on classical modeling structures (see e.g., [46]), and many techniques are exploited to estimate the parameters and the state of a queue ( [47]). In [48] the authors emphasized that switch performance depend on multiple factors, such as flow-table size, packet arrival rate, etc., and they took these key factors into account to design their M/Geo/1 system where the arriving packets follow a Poisson distribution and the service times follow a Geometric distribution.…”

“…From then on, many authors have discussed the inventory rationing problems. Readers may refer to a book by Möllering [61]; survey papers by Kleijn and Dekker [49] and Li et al [56]; and a research classification by Teunter and Haneveld [76], Möllering and Thonemann [62], Van Foreest and Wijngaard [79] and Alfieri et al [1].…”

“…The Markov decision process (MDP) [9][10][11] treats penetration testing as a state transition, reflecting the uncertainty of penetration testing. Some reinforcement learning algorithms are modeled by an MDP and are trained by interacting with the environment.…”
