An overexploited Italian treasure: past and present distribution and exploitation of the precious red coral Corallium rubrum (L., 1758) (Cnidaria: Anthozoa)

Abstract: The aim of this paper is to supply an overview of all historical and recent knowledge on landings, fishing and geographic distribution of the red coral banks along the Italian coasts in order to make a contribution to the conservation and future management of this resource. Along the Italian coasts, the banks have been exploited for millennia, using non-selective trawling gear that was banned in Europe in 1994. Today, harvesting is allowed only by scuba divers and regulated by specific laws. We examined 153 ye… Show more

“…The lengths of the concatenated LR and MSH sequences were between 264 base-pairs (bp) and 290 bp long per coral sample (Supplementary Results S2). Bayesian phylogenetic analysis identified 10 samples (11,14,19,22,23,31,34,38,41,45) as Corallium rubrum, of which nine had sequences identical to either of two the reference C. rubrum sequences, and one (11) had a single variable site (Fig. 4).…”

“…Most importantly, the use of lead additives in gasoline initiated in 1923 created a public health problem worldwide (Patterson, 1965). In this study, we determine the lead concentrations in the skeletons of Quite surprisingly, huge amounts of red coral collected in Italy in the last 150 years came from the sub-fossil coral reservoir of the Sciacca Banks (Sicily Channel) where 18,000 tons were collected in 34 years (Cattaneo-Vietti et al, 2016;Rajola, 2012). Large uncertainties still exist on the age of these sub-fossil colonies, but four samples were carbon dated at University of Salento (Italy) and provided ages between 2000 and 10,000 years BP (Rajola, 2012).…”
