An overall review on the tribological, thermal and rheological properties of nanolubricants

Abstract: Nanolubrication is one of the recent innovative technologies used in lubrication science. It involves dispersion of various types of nanoparticles in different concentrations in the conventional lubricant and studies the tribological properties of these lubricants on a particular tribopair under different operating parameters. Nanoparticles can be considered as potential lubricant additives. They present several major advantages compared to organic molecules currently used as lubricant additives, which include… Show more

“…The synergetic effect of hybrid nanoparticles affords a protective tribo-film during the rubbing process of the surface asperities. In another study regarding hybrid engine-based nanolubricants [24], the ZnO-decorated reduced graphene oxide/Mos2 nanolubricants showed a reduction in COF by 37%. The authors claimed that the enhancement in the friction properties returns to the formation of a protective thin tribo-layer with a low shear strength.…”

“…Nanomaterials have been studied intensively as additives for promoting lubricant capabilities. The application of nanoparticles in the engine's lubrication system showed a great deal of boosting the overall engine performance in many studies [20][21][22][23][24]. Nanolubricants have a major effect on promoting the wear process, which is the durability of the engine parts, with a considerable role in engine thermal efficiency [25].…”

“…e minimum coefficient of friction was observed with EN8-Al6061 tribo-pair [18]. It was observed that different geometric configuration (i.e., pin geometry: sphere-sphere, sphere-plane, block on ring, and piston ring-cylinder liner) induces different tribological characteristics (i.e., friction coefficient and wear rate) [18,19]. erefore, EN8-Al6061 tribo-pairs possess better tribological properties and require in-depth analysis (in terms of the state of stresses and friction developed, plastic deformation, and so on) at the different geometric configurations for further enhancement and widespread use of applications in industries.…”
