An Outbreak of Typhoid Fever, Xing‐An County, People's Republic of China, 1999: Estimation of the Field Effectiveness of Vi Polysaccharide Typhoid Vaccine

Abstract: To evaluate the effectiveness of Vi polysaccharide vaccine (Vi vaccine) in preventing typhoid fever, an analysis was done of an outbreak of typhoid fever among students attending a middle school in the People's Republic of China, where Vi vaccine is licensed for use. Vi vaccine effectiveness was analyzed by using Cox proportional hazards modeling to account for the time-dependent nature of vaccination and illness status during the outbreak. Among 1260 students who had been immunized before the outbreak, receip… Show more

“…Typhoid Vi polysaccharide vaccines have been used in mass vaccination campaigns in several Asian countries where typhoid fever is endemic and its epidemiology is well understood. 12,16,18,19 The success of vaccination campaigns has influenced WHO to recommend consideration of the use of these vaccines to target high-risk groups in countries where typhoid is endemic and to control epidemics. 12 Social scientists have investigated behavioral, sociocultural, political, and economic factors that may influence vaccine acceptance.…”

“…Processing of zwitterionic capsular polysaccharides by an MHC II pathway has very recently been suggested (Cobb et al 2004). (Acharya et al 1987, Yang et al 2001. Vaccines containing two (Groups A and C), three (Groups A, C and W135) or four meningococcal (Groups A, C, Y and W135) CPSs are licensed.…”

“…Earlier, the vaccines were given in multiple doses which were accompanied by adverse reactions. Now, due to the implementation of proper water and sanitation management, formulation of safe vaccines with simple doses [76] and mass awareness of such vaccinations programs have let to successful control in typhoid endemic countries [3,78].…”
