An Outbreak of Sheep Pox in Zabajkalskij kray of Russia

Abstract: In this study, we investigated recent sheep pox outbreaks that occurred in Ononsky and Borzunsky regions of Zabajkalskij kray of Russia. The outbreaks involved in 2756 animals of which 112 were infected and 3 were slaughtered. Samples of injured skin of infected sheep were analysed by electron microscopy and CaPV-specific P32 gene amplification. Following sequence analysis of entire P32 gene showed that both specimens were identical to the sequence of several sheep poxvirus isolates from China and India. The c… Show more

“…Sheep pox is considered as one of notifiable disease as recorded by WHO with worldwide distribution as widely found in India, China, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Greece, Iran, Iraq, Bangladesh and Pakistan (Rao and bandyopadhyau, 2000;Maksyutov et al, 2013;Hani et al, 2015;Constable et al, 2017;OIE, 2017). Presence of sheep pox disease in any country limits the trade of new breeds and development of intensive sheep production.…”

“…The current classification of CaPVs based on the animal species from which the viruses are isolated, and this suggests that CaPVs are strictly host-specific [8]. This conviction was corroborated by the absence of CaPV-like disease in sheep or goats in endemic areas with LSD in cattle.…”

“…Based on the P32 and RPO30 genes, phylogenetic analysis revealed a discrepancy in phylogenetic relationships between capripoxvirus species. Hosamani et al [10], Zhu et al [20], and Maksyutov et al [12] found that GTPV and LSDV are more closely related to each other than to SPPV when using the P32 gene. Venkatesan et al [21] obtained a phylogenetic tree that grouped SPPV and LSDV together, and our study confirmed that of Venkatesan et al [21] and demonstrated that SPPV and LSDV are clustered in a single group.…”
