An outbreak of Salmonella Newport associated with mung bean sprouts in Germany and the Netherlands, October to November 2011

Abstract: Molecular typing patterns of human isolates were indistinguishable from a mung bean sprouts isolate. Traceback of sprouts led to distributors and producer A in the Netherlands. Since sprouts are frequently contaminated with microorganisms, consumers need to be aware that consumption of raw or insufficiently cooked sprouts may pose a health risk.

“…The growth of a five serovar Salmonella cocktail was also evaluated in the selected enrichment broths in consideration of serovar variation. The cocktail included serovars that have been reported in outbreaks occurring over the past 10 years (Bayer et al, 2014;CDC, 2007;CDC, 2009;CDC, 2011;FDA, 2014c). S. Saintpaul and S. Newport had been identified as causative agents in two sproutrelated outbreaks (Bayer et al, 2014;CDC, 2009).…”

“…In 2009, 235 persons from 14 states in the United States (US) were infected with S. Saintpaul after consuming contaminated alfalfa sprouts (CDC, 2009). In 2011, an international outbreak of 106 clinical cases of S. Newport infections due to mung bean sprouts consumption was reported in Germany along with 20 confirmed illnesses in the Netherlands (Bayer et al, 2014). More recently, 111 people from 12 states in US were infected by an outbreak of S. Enteritidis linked to mung bean sprouts (FDA, 2014a).…”

“…The four last alarms correspond to a known outbreak in 2011 due to sprouts (Bayer et al 2014). One sees that the upperbound right after the outbreak is affected by the outbreak: it is very high, so that a smaller outbreak would not be detected.…”

“…In the United Sates, Salmonella outbreaks are most commonly associated with uncooked/under cooked poultry (30%), pork (8%), beef (8%), eggs (24%), fish (2%), dairy (5%) [11]. The consumption of contaminated fresh vegetables and fruits, such as alfalfa sprouts, tomatoes, lettuce, spinach, melons, and cantaloupes is also an important source of Salmonella infections [9,12,13]. In addition, Salmonella has been isolated from a variety of dried food or processed products such as peanut butter, whole egg powder, cereals, herbs, chocolates, almonds, pecans, soy bean meal, spices and dried mushrooms [14].…”
