An Organic Chemistry Activity to Improve Student Understanding of Molecules as 3-Dimensional Objects

Abstract:This report describes an activity that helps organic
chemistry
students to better understand organic molecules as 3-dimensional objects.
To accomplish this goal, the activity employs a unique three-way combination
of analyzing computer-generated 3-dimensional renditions of open access
X-ray crystallography data, building physical 3-dimensional representations
of molecules using model kits, and connecting the details of these
3-dimentional structures to melting-point data that the students collect.
The approach… Show more

scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
