An optimized fast voltage stability indicator

Abstract: This paper proposes a simulated annealing optimization technique for optimal voltage stability profile through out the whole power network. The technique is applied to control the power elements of major influence on the voltage stability profile. Elements such as generator reactive generation, adjustable shunt compensation devices, transformer tap settings are optimally adjusted at each operating point to reach the objective of minimizing the voltage stability index at each individual bus as well minimizing t… Show more

“…(17) In the DSA, the members or individuals composing the artificial organisms, which themselves compose the superorganism, to participate in the search process of stopover site are determined by a random process, as given in lines 8-29 of the algorithm of Figure 1. It is noteworthy to mention that if one of the stopover sites goes beyond the limits of the habitat (i.e., search space), the said element is randomly deferred to another position in the habitat (lines 31-33 of the algorithm of Figure 1).…”

“…One important characteristic of the power system is its ability to conserve constantly acceptable bus voltage at each node under normal operating conditions, after load increase, following system configuration changes, or when the system is being subjected to a disturbance. The non-optimized control variables may lead to progressive and uncontrollable drops in voltage, resulting in an eventual widespread voltage collapse [17]. As a result, voltage stability has become an issue of paramount importance to electric utilities, and it is attracting more and more attention.…”

“…The main factors contributing to the voltage collapse are the generators reactive power limit, load characteristics, voltage control limits, reactive compensation devices characteristics and their reactions. Voltage stability estimation techniques based on load flow Jacobian analysis such as, singular value decomposition, eigen value calculations, sensitivity factories, and modal analysis are time consuming for a large power system [2][3][4][5][6]. Several indices based methods such as Voltage Instability Proximity Index (VIPI) and Voltage Collapse Proximity Indicator (VCPI) are used to evaluate voltage instability.…”

“…In this work, the HPSO-MVO is implemented to unconstraint bench mark function and standard IEEE-30 bus test system [14] to solve the ORPD [15][16][17][18][19][20] problem. There are five objective cases considered in this paper that has to be optimize using HPSO-MVO technique are Fuel Cost Reduction, Voltage Stability Improvement, Voltage Deviation Minimization, Active Power Loss Minimization and Reactive Power Loss Minimization.…”
