An Optimal Self-Report Physical Activity Measure for Older Adults: Does Physical Function Matter?

Abstract: The authors compared two self-report measures of physical activity, the Physical Activity Scale for the Elderly (PASE) and the Community Healthy Activities Model Program for Seniors (CHAMPS), against the device-derived SenseWear Armband (SWA), to identify a recommended self-report tool to measure physical activity in older adults across physical function levels. A total of 65 community-dwelling older adults completed the PASE, CHAMPS, and seven full days of SWA wear. The authors measured physical function usin… Show more

“…For MVPA, we observed a slightly higher correlation between objective and self-reported measures (r=0.25, p<0.05), yet it is still lower than previous finding showing that the CHAMPS questionnaire was moderately correlated with the objective SenseWear Armband (rho=0.42, p=0.002). 45 In SOMMA, the objective measure classified more time spent in MVPA than by self-reported. Conversely to self-reported, the objective measure showed longer time in MVPA in women than men.…”

“…For MVPA, we observed a lower correlation between ActiGraph and CHAMPS ( r = 0.25, p < 0.05) than a previous study that used the SenseWear Armband ( ρ = 0.42, p = 0.002). 46 In SOMMA, the ActiGraph classified much more time spent in MVPA than did the CHAMPS questionnaire. Such differences could be driven by either the finite list of MVPA-related activities included in the CHAMPS questionnaire, or a potential misclassification of light activity as MVPA when the Montoye et al 29 cut points were applied to the ActiGraph data.…”
