A unified and automated fault management platform for heterogeneous optical networks is quite important for telecom operators to monitor and respond to various levels of network events. In this demo, we are demonstrating the details of the design, implementation and evaluation of the proposed HUBBLE platform while targeting to manage the underlying optical network of a telecom operator in real time. The proposed HUBBLE platform consists of three major building blocks i) a data collection layer that is integrated with the telecom operator infrastructure, (ii) data association and analysis layer that is used to measure the severity levels based on predefined alarm severity levels and constraints, and (iii) user interface layer that is on top of management and infrastructure layer which is used to demonstrate the faulty optical lines and is also integrated with fault management systems. Through the dashboard interface of the proposed HUBBLE platform, telecommunication operator's network optimization experts can easily detect the problems related to either fiber or DWDM link and can take appropriate actions.

Energy consumption has become a limiting factor for deploying large-scale distributed infrastructures. This work 1 seeks to improve the energy efficiency of backbone networks by providing an intra-domain Software Defined Network (SDN) approach to selectively turn off a subset of links. We propose the STREETE framework (SegmenT Routing based Energy Efficient Traffic Engineering) that dynamically adapts the number of powered-on links to the traffic load. The core of the solution relies on SPRING, a novel protocol being standardized by IETF. It is also known under the name of Segment Routing. The algorithms have been implemented and evaluated using the OMNET++ simulator. Experimental results show that the consumption of 44% of links can be reduced while preserving good quality of service.

Terabit elastic optical networking (EON) is foreseen as a viable solution to extend the lifetime of a network exploiting the available bandwidth in previously deployed optical fibers. EON is based on bandwidth-variable transponders capable of supporting multiple bit rates and/ or modulation formats according to traffic requirements and node architectures that route arbitrary channel bandwidths. Thus, EON increases the heterogeneity of the network, which may create the need for autonomic adaptive and/or cognitive techniques. In this context, the software-defined networking (SDN) paradigm emerges as an opportunity to enable such techniques thanks to the centralized view of the network by decoupling the control plane and the data plane. This paper surveys different activities carried out at the Optical Technologies Division in Centro de Pesquisa e Desenvolvimento em Telecomunicações, Brazil. We review an optical transport SDN controller for virtual optical networks that supports two adaptive algorithms. First, the autonomic flexible transponder reconfigures the transmission modulation format according to a threshold level. Second, the adaptive global spectrum equalization reconfigures the wavelengths' attenuation profiles applied at the optical nodes to improve the signals' optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) at reception. Finally, we report experimental results of an in-band OSNR monitor for advanced modulation formats.
