An opiine Braconidae (Hymenoptera) reared from Richardiidae (Diptera) and recognition of a new species group of Opius s. l.

Abstract: A new species of opiine Braconidae, Opius rojam Daniels & Wharton, is described from Trinidad. The description is based in part on two individuals reared from Sepsisoma erythrocephalum infesting shoots of the grass Paspalum fasciculatum. This is the first record of members of the Opiinae attacking species in the dipteran family Richardiidae. The Opius ingenticornis species group is proposed and delineated to accommodate this and several putatively related species formerly included in Opius (Merotrachys), Opius… Show more

“…Sculpture is variable in the Tennessee specimens, with some individuals exhibiting virtually no obvious sculpture while others are weakly striate or punctato-striate. In either case, the sculpture in Opius peleus is distinctly different from that found in members of the ingenticornis species group, most of which have previously been included in Merotrachys (Wharton et al 2013). Opius peleus also lacks the large pronope and complete dorsal carinae on T1 characteristic of members of the ingenticornis group.…”

“…The systematics of the Opiinae remains contentious, with van Achterberg and Salvo () restricting the definition of Opius to species with a basal lobe on the mandible, while Wharton et al . () retain a more conservative definition of the genus that we have followed.…”

“…The only exception is for Neochrysocharis formosa where we accept that the gender of Neochrysocharis, based on the Greek ending -charis, is feminine. The systematics of the Opiinae remains contentious, with van Achterberg and restricting the definition of Opius to species with a basal lobe on the mandible, while Wharton et al (2013) retain a more conservative definition of the genus that we have followed.…”
