An open-label trial of enhanced brief interpersonal psychotherapy in depressed mothers whose children are receiving psychiatric treatment

Abstract: Major depression affects one out of five women during her lifetime. Depressed mothers with psychiatrically ill children represent an especially vulnerable population. Challenged by the demands of caring for ill children, these mothers often put their own needs last; consequently, their depressions remain untreated. This population is especially difficult to engage in treatment. We have developed a nine-session intervention, an engagement session followed by eight sessions of brief interpersonal psychotherapy d… Show more

“…ITP-MOMS has been described elsewhere (18). “…Interpersonal psychotherapy for mothers, brief interpersonal psychotherapy for depressed mothers (IPT-MOMS), is a nine-session intervention based on interpersonal psychotherapy for depression (16) with additional modifications designed to help depressed mothers engage in treatment (17) and address relationship difficulties that arise in the context of parenting an ill child (18). This article describes a randomized, controlled trial of IPT-MOMS as a treatment for major depressive disorder in non-treatment-seeking mothers whose school-age children are receiving psychiatric treatment.…”

“…Brief interpersonal psychotherapy consists of eight weekly, 45-min individual sessions and has received empirical support in a number of studies (Grote et al 2004;Swartz et al 2004;Swartz et al 2006). A treatment manual is available on request (Swartz et al unpublished).…”

“…Numerous supportive uncontrolled case studies using MI for depression, 42,49 suicidal ideation, 36,50 and compliance with antidepressants 30 have been reported. Beyond this, Swartz et al 51 and Grote et al 23 have evaluated MI-enhanced interviewing to facilitate entry into treatment among people unlikely to seek care for mental health problems. Promising findings demonstrating high rates of treatment entry and completion among mothers of children with psychiatric illness requiring treatment for depression (open-label study 51 ), and pregnant, depressed, and economically disadvantaged women (compared with treatment as usual 23 ) have been reported.…”

Promising findings demonstrating high rates of treatment entry and completion among mothers of children with psychiatric illness requiring treatment for depression (open-label study 51 ), and pregnant, depressed, and economically disadvantaged women (compared with treatment as usual 23 ) have been reported. Response rates to MI were also very favourable in an RCT comparing brief primary care physician-administered MI (10 to 15 minutes) with brief physician advice, for engaging adolescents at risk for depression with an Internet-based prevention intervention.…”
